I have Ryzen 5 1600 and MSI B350M Mortar Arctic. Also got ID-Cooling Frostflow as CPU cooler.

This is my first time overclocking.. I tried x38 multiplier and 1.35V but when I get back to check CPU-Z, instead of the multiplier going from x34 to x38, it went down to x15.5 What could be the problem?

Updates:

Tried x37 w/ 1.35V still no good.

Tried x38 w/ Auto Voltage and it worked. WTH?!

If it drops to x15 that's just power saving. There's no need to run at max clock all the time so it just lowers to the lowest ration when it's idle.

Fire up a CPU stress utility and it *should* go to x38 if you've done it right.

Our Father Birb has taught us with His humble heart and gentle wing the way of the bob. Let us show Him our reverence and follow in His example. It doesnt. Currently running Aida64 while posting this reply. Also i've tried x37 with 1.35V just to be sure. No good.

And to be exact with the numbers, it only runs with x15.5 multiplier fixed.

no, but i remember seeing a thread not long ago about this same problem. He noticed that with the memory OCd, the speed dropped to 15x, without it OC'd, the Ryzen would OC.

Similar problem though it seems to have a different trigger. Mine cant completely OC as far as I can tell. I haven't even touched the memory yet. What a bad experience for my first time. :(

I started with 1.4v at x40.00 on my R7 but that was unstable af so I started scaling it down for hours until I finally gave up and settled for x37.25 at 1.25v

After nuking one 1700X, i am a firm believer of 1.35 as the absolute max voltage for everyday OC on R7.

Well about the latest BIOS, I'm actually using the second latest as when I had the newest, it had this massive bug where when ever I try to quit BIOS, it would just completely lock up and freeze :P

Anyway, if you're not on at least the third newest BIOS, I'd recommend you to update it as it hurts nothing to update it, unless you lose power at a bad time or stupidly pull out the memory stick...

I was but i am on a gigabyte mobo. It's called the 15.5 multiplier bug. once you dial in a manual voltage it locks your multiplier to 15.5 when booting in windows while in the bios it shows the correct value. I contacted Gigabyte and they send me an beta bios that fixed it. Maybe you should try and contact MSI support.

MSI mobos are complete trash, one guy with B350 Carbon had it as well. Its worth it to get an Asus mobo, they don't have any issues afaik.

Buddy of mine got no issues at all with his MSI b350 mortar so i dont think its completly fair to call it trash. It's a new platform and it has to mature. My gigabyte board gave me a lot of trouble when i just had it and now im a few month in and after each bios update it gets better.

MSI B350s have

1) Shit VRM (4 lowside shitty fets with no efficency)

2) worst BIOS support i have ever seen in my entire life.

I returned my MSI and got Asus. There was a little issue with LAN not booting everytime after AC power loss. We reported it on ROG forums and within a week there was a new BIOS update that both fixes the issue and adds much better Hynix ram compatibility.

MSI screws up AMD boards, their AM3+ were horrible, AM4s aren't much better.

Check my thread and learn why, only BIOS development took them 3 months to give users bios that broke the motherboards even more.
