The 1060 3GB wasn't favoured due to having fewer cores than 6GB version, as well as the lower ram. What else is in your price range? Can you stretch to a 6GB model? Otherwise you might consider used cards if available, how are 970 and 980 cards priced?

I would say the ttc 1060 3gb isn't as good as the ttc 1060 6gb for sure but it isn't a bad card by any means. It just isn't priced right. If the card is priced right it is a very decent 1080p gpu. I would say it's probably pretty comparable  to the gtx 970 in performance.

There is no 1060 ti but your new build compared to your laptop in a big improvement and games would run better it would be smarter to stretch and get a 6gb card but anything is a upgrade from the laptop
