Threadripper Build

kanesmadness

So to start with...why threadripper? Why not I think, it looks pretty good so far and seeing how ill be buying to mobo and processor last I can always change my mind once some apples to apples comparisons start floating out.

So the current parts list looks something like this. *Early days so subject to change.*

Other

AVerMedia GV570 Capture Card

Focusrite Scarlette 2i2 - In Existing Build

Some cable mod addressable LED strips - Ordered 10-8-17

Some parts have been chosen because they are either in stock or easy-ish to come buy. I live in the middle of nowhere so if a company ships items express then im more likely to buy stuff from them. So far my go to has been PC Case Gear who have been amazing with my previous builds. There is some stuff missing (water blocks stand out as the obvious one). This either dont exist yet or im not worried about them enough to count them up yet and ill add them when it is time.

With any luck, the first batch of parts should arrive this week (case and some water cooling bits)

but why? Why are you getting threadripper. Why do you even have NVME drives. Its seems rather pointless unless you actually state what your going to be using it for, otherwise your just throwing money away at something thats non beneficial lol

So do i some CAD and GIS work as well as some light video and photo editing. I'll also be using it to stream and game.

To be honest, I know it's over kill. But so long as im not robbing people to get the cash to pay for it does it really matter?

To answer the rest of your question. As @DrMacintosh said...Intel has nothing at the moment that touches threadripper. A 7900X in AUD at the moment is $1449 and the 1950X is $1439 (when its released in 3 days). As for why NVME drives...unless im missing some kind of compatibility problem why wouldn't I go with fastest possible drives.

Hell yes am I looking forward to this. standard AusPost at the moment is about 3 weeks to here. If Amazon can do better (and most of my international orders are now) i will likely end up over there. For now im pretty happy with PCCG though.

Not to mention Threadripper has the PCIe lanes to support them....unlike Intel.....

NVMe is fast but definitely not the best price/GB by a long shot. And it doesn't really make anything that much faster normally, especially for windows boot, games, etc.

Where NVMe shines is content creation, where file transfers and large blocks of data are the bottleneck.

Honestly most of the time people who post these builds with under 10 posts just do it to post and never actually care to build it. Depending on the video editing software its not going to utilize even half the cores fully.

If your doing CAD for work and actually making money with large file sizes, or doing video edits and such,  then NVME drives are worth it. Otherwise, NVME drives are pointless because most programs cannot utilize the speed and its just spending extra money for what could be spent on a higher capacity.

It annoys me that people dont do their HW with programs and their core utilization, and spend extra money on stuff they simple wont use or need where it could be spent better elsewhere.

All good @Shimejii , I've been on here a while but I've been more lurker. Im trying to be a bit more active, but well yeah. Either way, the build is happening, it's just happening among other things (for example my car has just been recalled because both the air bags are basically deadly).

As for CAD, while I don't make my living off it, I do make some money off it. At the moment im running AutoCAD Suite, ArcGIS and the usual suspects for photo video
(audition, after effects, photoshop). Like I said, it's over kill, and I will almost certainly never hit the sides for performance, but it's what I enjoy doing so yeah.

Now that EK has announced dates for their Threadripper block I placed the order today with some other parts I was going to need, I've not ordered directly from them before so it will be interesting to see when it all turns up. Lucky for me though the rest of my order arrived today. Sadly I'm at work so I couldn't get things kicked off.

Finally got a chance to do a bit more prep on the build today and hit a huge road block.

Looks like with the be quiet case I can choose either dual radiators or hard drives...but not both. This is a massive pain for two reasons...I really like this case and there is no way im going to be able to sell it off locally. So that's a thing.

Also while I was flushing the rad's I was watching JayzTwoCents threadripper build video and he made a pretty good point. Threadripper and two 1080Ti's are going to give off insane amounts of heat and a dual loop might be a better option anyway. So looks like CaseLabs is the only option at the moment. I guess I'll see what I can find at least in the same country.

  • 2 weeks later...

Well, im having more and more parts problems...my boot SSD is to quote my supplier "somewhere" along with some other parts I ordered for another project. My case only got shipped on Wednesday after that suppler wanted to do a verification...after they had already charged me anyway.. and some other parts are out of stock. *sigh*

Anyway...today I had some free time and my EK order arrived on Friday and my RAM and GPU's arrived today. Yes...my desk is super messy at the moment...I have like 5 projects on the go at the moment...It's on tomorrows plan I swear.

I like the silver...but I like the black tops better.

DSC_2207.thumb.JPG.9c3b181e2a761d816ce24c61c700c128.JPG

Looks pretty good I think...thanks CableMod... The only issue I had with this kit was that one of the cross overs has a machining stuff up so it won't go the whole way down to the screws. Lucky I had spares.

DSC_2208.thumb.JPG.6616f7b81d5c32badc3a94b604620b7e.JPG

All four DIMM's done..and I didn't drop any of the tiny screws.

I don't know if its a fan cooler thing (I've only done blower cards in the past) But this weird skeleton thing is really annoying "yes...all 9000 screws are out...nope missed one...now im done...nope one more...eww why is this end sticky"

DSC_2216.thumb.JPG.81f96c07cfe566e8bde76f279eaedb05.JPG

One down...EK scaring the hell out of me with the usual excess of screws included.

And im done.

Not sure when the next update will be...once the case arrives ill be able to start ordering the right rads, fans and pumps. Until then (might be two weeks).

Of man, this build feels like it is a million miles away still.

But today the case and some parts for the case (wheels, rad mounts) arrived today. Sadly I have two laptops and 5 desktops on the bench at the moment I need to get done first. But once they're done I can map out the parts for my coolings loops.

I did a ThreadRipper build just 2 weeks ago with the Dark Base Pro 900. I only went for an AIO so the radiator/hard drive issues weren't a problem for me. You're going to have quite the rig on your hands when its done!

So short update (no pictures...yet)

The rad mounts for the case did not arrive, instead, i got some doors for a chenbro rack mount case. It took all day back a forward via email to convince them of the stuff up. But I've ordered all my water cooling parts now with the exception of the fans. Im still deciding if I'll wait for the EK ones I want to come back in stock or some Corsair MagLev's. If someone wants to comment either way im all ears. Ill most likely need to call a supplier anyway to see what they have.

Also buying a driver just for putting the caselabs case together was the best idea I've had in ages, there were at least 70 screws in the bloody thing. Oh...also the mobo is on its way and I have the rest of the week off.

More components arrived today and seeing as I still have the day off I got a little bit of stuff done so far. Order yet more parts from case labs...these are at least 3 weeks away so it will be lots of little stuff from here I guess.

So for those who don't know...the Magnum SMA8 arrives flat packed in these amazingly high-quality plastic bags with all the smaller parts in zip lock bags.

Almost done

This thing was a life saver...was about $200 on ebay with a drill, bag and some bits. Well worth it in my eyes.

And here it is assembled...not that it matters because I will need to pull it apart again to mount the front radiator mount.

Here is what they sent instead of the radiator mounts.

It's update day. Well, the bulk of the parts have now arrived, including the most exciting part...the 1950X Threadripper. Don't worry about the K400's, they are for another project.

I now need to order some more fans and fan splitters, while also deciding if ill order something like an Aquero and some liquid monitoring gear...im still undecided on this.

I've also had to order another memory mod pack from CableMod as one of the spare packs I had contained a dodgy heat spreader. Now for the weirdest thing I've had to order...I had Shapeways make me some 15mm spacers so I can mount the res mounts without tilting everything back too far. It's the most annoying thing because it's something I could have done in like an hour with a 3d printer and both of them would be mounted and good to go. Ah well...just need to wait now.
