What will happen to Ryzen?

Guest

Been thinking for awhile about this what will happen to Ryzen once Coffee lake comes out? Let's say Intel makes a I5 for 240$ and its a 6 core CPU as rumors and leaks suggest?

Kaby-lake has 15% more IPC and it allows for 15%+ higher overclocks that means 30% more per core performance over Ryzen.

Doing some math

8X100=800

6X100=600

6X130=780

4X130=520

Meaning a coffee lake 6 core CPU will dominate a Ryzen 6 core and basically be even in multithreading tasks compared to a Ryzen 7 while providing 30%+ more per core performance.

So i'd say Amd will lower prices but to what exactly? My guess is the 8 core will be 250$ with the 6 core fighting off the I3 and 4 core will be shoved down to 70-90$ market. Leaving Amd once again unable to fight a I7 except for threadripper.

I guess Amd has 6 months or longer to decide but i really think Coffee Lake is going to hurt Amd really badly. I don't see them in one simple new batch of CPU's coming out with 15% more IPC and 15%+ more overclocking headroom.

Threadripper will continue to dominate Intel however in the HEDT market so that is good at least and in that market single core performance matters a lot less.

Probably not much, Coffe Lake is a whole new platform and won't be here for a while. We don't really know what to expect but the more cores Intel adds the less powerful those individual cores get. So keep that in mind.

zen+ won't be using the low power silicon thing (don't know what the low power silicon is, i just read it off of /r/amd a couple of months ago) so expect better overclocking

Coffee Lake is bound for "2H 2017"

It will be here soon

If X299 is anything to go by, I wouldn't get your hopes up on this. The 8 core can already be had for $290 from AMD, so Intel are going to have to do some clever pricing (this will be a first)

We'll probably see higher clock speeds with Zen+ and expect better overclocking. Right now it feels like Ryzen's power consumption and heat is exponential and is really noticeable past 3.8GHz hope they break the 4.0GHz barrier next time. Maybe Infinity Fabric refinements as well and they promised IPC improvements with Zen 2 so let's hope that it is true

2018 is gonna be an interesting year for both side though

I think that is more of a rush just to stay on top in terms of performance i mean a 10 core Intel CPU in know way can take a 16 core ryzen Intel new that so they had to do 18 cores just so they can remain the best in terms of performance.

Coffee lake was supposed to be a 2018 product now its a 2017 product Intel is for sure thinking ahead i just hope Amd is too. I'd be happy to see Ryzen+ coming sooner then planned but Amd doesn't have the resources to rush that product so instead price drops which i hate to see happen to Amd again as they need all the money they can get for future research and development.

I don't think you will see much improvement in the near term.

It's going to take a number with a lot of 0s after it to get below 10nm processes. That's where you will see big changes. Intel has a lot bigger wallet to do that, BUT they have already admitted that desktop chips ARE NOT a priority and the first 10nm desktop chips will be slower than the current 14nm.

So for the next couple years it will be a price war, not really performance.
