Windows Mixed Reality developer headsets go on sale

Microsoft is now making two Windows Mixed Reality headsets available to anyone today. The software giant has listed Acer’s headset in its online Microsoft Store for $299, alongside the $329 HP headset. Both headsets have similar specifications, including 2.89-inch displays and six degrees of freedom tracking for Microsoft’s Windows Mixed Reality world.

 

Microsoft first opened preorders for its headsets back in May, allowing developers to get early access. While these headsets are still aimed at developers, Neowin has noticed that anyone can purchase them from the Microsoft Store today. Both development kits use internal tracking sensors, which removes the need for external cameras or markers. The experience of the headsets is very similar to VR, regardless of the “mixed reality” branding.

I love that you get 1440x1440 per eye at 90Hz but I have no clue if you could get these working with existing VR games/apps. I also would like to know if you could get a normal desktop experience with these.

When windows 10 was launched they said windows 10 VR is coming so I would assume you will get a desktop in VR. I know minecraft VR is going to be popular now at $299. Linus should get one

I remember Luke complaining about a very narrow "fov" ("overlay" I suppose would be a better word since it's not real VR) with the original Microsoft hololens or whatever it was called... lets hope this is better

This is completely different. These are VR headsets, it's just Microsoft being weird about wanting to call it mixed reality.

 

Bear in mind these don't currently come with motion controllers, though those will be available later for added cost.

ya both of these are 95 when Oculus and the Rift is 110 so a little smaller but the higher res will make it a sharper image.

In the product descriptions it says that both headsets have a 95 degree FOV. For reference, the rift and Vive are 110 degrees.

honestly right now I see myself to still want to use keyboard/mouse and a normal gamepad. I am looking for a good siting experience.  and the fact these should be able to use the camera to see were your hands are is very helpful.

KB+M is pretty awkward in VR. A gamepad is fine, but obviously limiting in terms of content and experiences. And you can easily use motion controllers while sitting.

The fov was bad because of how holo lens worked. This is a screen like in the vive.

It will be interesting to see if the resolution is good enough for that kind of use... Though I still don't see much point.

yeah, if you consider how much resolution just looking at a normal 1080p monitor is suddenly things don't seem so good.  Consider that it would take up at most ~90° of your field of view probably, and that's 1920 wide.  If you were to simulate a screen in front of you in VR, best this can do is ~1400 wide for that same size of image (if I'm imagining this correctly) and that's not fantastic by any means.

I just see it like a monitor purchase and if I am going to put money into it I want to be able to use it almost as often and it being comfortable enough to do so.

keep in mind this is coming from someone who has never tried VR, but personally I think we need to get to at least 140°, and cover that area with at least 4K per eye
