Getting photo's from dead phone

Walt

Hi everyone,

I just got an old motherboard (from a Samsung phone) from a friend. He asked me if I could get the photos from it.

I am not sure if it's possible because I don't see a mini sd card or whatsoever but  maybe someone could help me. Any advise?

Thanks!

"dead phones tell no tails..."

might need to get that thing over to a phone repair center if nothing was backed up to Apple or Google.

There are dozens of Samsung phones. Without any specifics, it's like me handing you my motherboard and asking to get photos off it somehow.

A pic may help, but this sounds like something best left to professionals and a good reminder to anyone if they care for their data, always utilize backups.

Need really really expensive professional equipment or reassemble the phone and power it back on to have any chance of grabbing the photos out.

Does it show up in device manager when plugged in?

I've successfully recovered a "dead" Note 4 (no display, no touch, screen locked) by booting it in download mode and flashing a recovery that allowed ADB access.

This method doesn't work on newer models with enhanced security and/or phones with a locked bootloader. But if you're lucky and the phone is unlocked it might just work.

Main Linux rig: HP Elitebook 2560P (i5-2410M, 8 GB, Pop! OS)

Living room/couch gaming rig: AMD 5800X, Asus TUF Radeon 6900 XT, 32 GB, 65" LG C1 OLED

Home server and internet gateway: Dell Optiplex 3040 MFF (i5-6500T, 16 GB, Ubuntu Server 22.04 LTS)

Phone: Asus Zenfone 10

I only got the motherboard from him but I have another battery (from another phone) that I can plug in. Is that a good idea?

The phone is from 2014 so it's old... :)

If the data is important enough and you're unsure about the recovery method: contact a professional recovery firm or a digital forensics lab.

If not, then go ahead and plug it in.

There is no easy way to tell if the "phone" is actually booting up without the vibration motor in place. All you can really do is hold down the power button for some time until something pops up in device manager.

Keep in mind that some phones refuse to boot without a (charged) battery.

You can emulate a "charged" battery by applying ~3.8-4.0 volts to the battery terminals. Connecting a random battery from another phone is not recommended.
