I'm in the middle of accumulating parts to build a computer for my mom for Christmas.  I'm using a combination of new parts bought specifically for her build and parts from my personal rig that I'm upgrading. I've got the basics (ssd, hdd, psu) plus the cpu (i5-7600k). But I'm having a hard time deciding on the graphics solution. My mom used her computer mostly for web browsing, listening to music, and streaming (Netflix). She does the occasional very light video editing. Mostly,  she's a YouTube junkie,  often with a dozen or more tabs open at a time.

I've got a 980ti I've just taken out of my rig (upgraded to the 1080ti), but that seems like a lot of overkill. At the same time, I'm not sure if integrated graphics will be adequate. She'll be running her 1080 monitor (probably not going 4k for a while).

So should I sell the 980ti and get a lesser gpu? Would integrated graphics be adequate (at least for the time being)?

Also,  would more ram be a good investment for her? I run 32gb on mine and have ample to spare,  but i rarely have nkow than 2 tabs open!

I found it far easier to spec a computer for my own use!

Man even having the 7600K is pretty overkill for a mom PC. Just do the 7600K with 16gb of RAM, an SSD, and sell the 980 ti and just get a 1050 ti, that is already way overkill.

Do we still reccomend 750tis around here?

Honestly, I'd stick with integrated graphics. But if you really want to spoil her go with a low end GPU on the RX series or something like a 1050ti...

why not there cheap  and dont use use much power

Integrated graphics are more than enough, since there's only light work, you can go even 4k without any issues, for light video editing I assume is movie maker, so Nvidia Cuda won't make a difference here, and even if she uses more advanced software that can use the GPU for rendering, there's Intel Quick Sync.

Integrated graphics would be fine for her use. Maybe wait for this cryptocurrency bubble to pop and buy up a used 1060 when they flood the market with them.

It wont pop, just slowly leak

I say keep the 980ti, so if she ever needs to do some heavy GPU work (like REAL cideo editing or gaming) she will have ample power available.

In my opinion overkill is always better than not good enough.

Nah, I really think the 980 ti will be a waste of good GPU.

Get a low-mid end graphics card, like an RX 460 or a 1050/750 Ti. Even that's a bit more than what you need, but she's not gaming and her video editing is probably limited to just a highlight reel of the family vacation. If you wanted to run integrated, that's not a bad idea. Spend no more than $120 or so on a GPU.

The built in Intel HD Graphics of an i5-7500/i5-6500 is enough already for those tasks. I think what she need is a computer with more RAM at least 8 GB or up to accommodate those browser tabs.

If you want, you can just get her an Intel Nuc with i5-7260U plus Intel Iris 640 graphics then add a 250GB Samsung 850 Evo then 8 GB DDR4 SODIMM memory plus a copy of Windows 10 Home and you're good.

Integrated graphics will probably do, the 980ti may be helpful if the software that she uses supports GPU encoding.  It wouldn't hurt.

How much ram does she have?

As of right now, none!  I was probably going to go with 16gb since she's tab happy.

That's pretty much where I was in my head.  I'm thinking I'll give her integrated graphics for now and see how that goes.  I can always pick up a gpu later if necessary.
