Rudiantara stated, since 2016, the government has asked social media platforms to close down negative contents in social media. But up until today, only 50% has complied.

“Until today, only 50% of these platforms have done what we asked of them. This is very disappointing,” he said.

The Ministry has reached out again to social media platforms to remind them to close negative contents last month. His side is still waiting for changes by the platforms.

“If there are no changes, we’ll really consider closing down the platforms. We are sorry if we have to close them down. This is because we want technology to be used in a good way,” he noted.

This closure, he said, is done in stages. The government will start limiting ads on social media. This is because the main business strategy of social media is advertisement.

“Logically speaking, anyone who wants to do business also wants political safety. Well, do these platforms want to do business or disrupt? If they want to do business, follow the government’s rules,” he stated.

 

 

At this point, if the internet doesn't comply to Indonesian government's wimps, I'd be in the dark. The government has already blocked Reddit in light of the uncensored contents in it. Porn is a big NO NO too (cleavage is part of porn, as it seems).

The Ministry has finally got a response from Telegram's CEO and has agreed to delete terrorist contents as per the Ministry's request. As Telegram doesn't seem to have a direct communication link with the Indonesian government, the request was sent through a public channel and seemed to have passed through without being checked. They've agreed to make a more direct communications line with the government.

“It turns out that the officials of the Ministry recently emailed us a list of public channels with terrorism-related content on Telegram, and our team was unable to quickly process them. Unfortunately, I was unaware of these requests, which caused this miscommunication with the Ministry,” Durov recounted on his public Telegram channel.

It seems like because Telegram is relatively new and small compared to other chat apps, they don't seem to have a grasp of the language/culture to properly take care of it.

At the end of the day, even if Telegram is blocked, these groups would probably use other means of communication. But as long as my government doesn't try to snoop into privacy, the outrage should subside. There's really no specific internet privacy laws, just the regular "your privacy is your privacy, but can be taken away if needed for the court of law". Telegram seems to also agree that privacy is more important though, so I just hope that they don't succumb to demands of backdoors, should any come in the future

Virtual Private Network. Make sure the VPN you're choosing also handles their own DNS on every server.

Currently I just change my DNS to something else, it'll take a while before they block this. When it happens, I'll try to get a VPN subscription once I have a credit card.

DNS requests are unencrypted just so you know and they can easily trace it back to you. A good VPN service not only hides your IP address and websites visited but also encrypts your DNS requests. So your government cannot trace your browsing habits at all.

I know, but VPN is expensive when compared to my monthly living budget (it's equivalent to $100). VPN just doesn't fit the budget. Besides, these online purchases require a credit card, which I do not have

While i feel sorry for the normal, honest hard working person there, I don't give them wrong because over there is getting a strong ISIS presence, they already have had battles in a part there with the government and some ISIS members that moved there and they already have different groups.

You have a point but we're talking about the same government that allows a province to follow sharia law in full, and in doing so violating human rights. 

So I'm having a hard time trusting that government.

In Opera's case it's bundled with the browser, so even if there is an interest behind it it's probably focused on increasing their marketshare rather than selling your data.

Indonesian here and here's a summary of indonesian censorship: it's dumb and racist

there was one movie that was upcoming on theaters that didn't make it to indonesia and the reason behind it was there was partial nudity and sex stuff

and literally a month after that there was a movie produced IN indonesia called "suster ngesot" iirc and since the villain/ghost is basically naked it's like 60% of the scene has nudity

 

logic!

 

another thing that always pisses me off but i won't go to full detail but this is the basic summary: lady gaga comes to the country people boo her, shortly after maria ozawa comes and people cheer like it's the second coming of jesus (she came to do a shoot for a movie not porn)

here's a story about indonesian censorship again

 

so reddit (still blocked) and imgur (unblocked) and major pornsites got blocked and was the first major censorship in indonesian internet under the program called "internet sehat" in translation means "healthy internet"

 

and the reasoning behind those censorship besides the major pornsites was because users can still find porn material on those websites (yeah on small parts of the websites) and they decided LET'S BLOCK THE WHOLE THING BABY! (rip trying to find advice/news/solutions/cat pics/linustechtips subreddit)

 

there are a bunch of other websites that aren't pornsites that they blocked for no reason

 

a simple dns change can bypass this except google dns and open dns on some major isp

 

as for my opinion on this telegram block, not a lot of people do use telegram from what i see

the major messaging app here is whatsapp and line (wechat is also pretty big)

so telegram won't give much sh#t and i won't be surprised

You are free to not trust them.

 

The government is fair in allowing sharia law in that Provence as that is a way of life there and while it may not be up to western standards the people there live differently that you do and have always done so, it is similar to the maroons of Jamaica in that they govern themselves and their land.

 

You cannot allow the various different groups, around the world known and unknown, to continue using and circumventing daily tools and laws so they can achieve their "goals" that also violates the same human rights that has you so distrusting of the present governing  party.
