Actually the 1800X is about $300 cheaper than the i7-7820X

Oh and the Ryzen motherboards are cheaper and dont require any special hoops.

Why not?  For the additional $500-$600 I will enjoy ~28% more performance over the length of ownership for the machine.  That is completely relevant when making a hardware investment.

X299 isn't bad in terms of performance, and if you like it that's great. But it's not something that a lot of people here would buy over Ryzen/Threadripper because of the price/performance differences in setups (including motherboard) being much better with Ryzen. I'm not saying that Ryzen is more powerful, because it's not. What I'm saying is that it's currently a better value for most people.

But hey if you're going to fully utilize all 6 cores and 12 threads of that to their fullest potential, maybe it was a good purchase for you.

Obviously Ryzen is the better value.  For this machine performance was obviously a bigger factor for me than value.

To scoff and dismiss x299 is both arrogant and ignorant.

its about not buying bad platforms.

Then you're probably one of the last people who should be giving advice.

As it stands, X299 has an IPC advantage, clockspeed advantage, and an AVX1/2/512 advantage (isn't hindered, quad channel when AVX benefits from that bandwidth, SLX has it, All those reasons are respective to the order in which I list them and the AVX version). Which gives X299 better long term viability, which is completely ignored with the short sighted price/performance comparisons.

Hell, just going with the current claim of price/performance comparison is HEAVILY flawed, as and Ryzen 7 @ 4GHz or so is outpaced by the 6700K/7700K in AVX workloads, and damn near matches the 7600K. That's Ryzen overclocked to its wits, not able to match Intel's equivalents in pricing. In an instruction set that actually matters to the target audience of X299.

Hell, some of Intel's most expensive first and second generation Core i chips are just now becoming non-viable for high end gaming and overall great performance, when the "value" chips become non-vialbe after a year or two due to software requirement increases.

Hell, anyone on one of Intel's older enthusiast platforms hasn't really felt the need to upgrade unless they explicitly need the core count or single core performance that a newer platform provides. Neither of those are happening with most users. Those few upgrading from the still highly viable platforms to X299, like @done12many2, are doing so because they're enthusiasts and like having new and shiny toys to be playing with, and will tell you that the old platforms are still viable, and that isn't going to magically change with X299.

However, unless AMD has a proverbial rabbit in their hat, TR will have only one advantage, more (weaker) cores for a lower cost. But in tasks that many X299 users are more prone to have, which benefit from AVX, 2 of AMD's Zen cores will roughly equate to 1 Sky/Kaby core of similar clockspeed.

Im not defending Ryzen. The only thing ive done is say that x299 is quite dumb (and most everyone agrees) and that Ryzen is cheaper.

Sure x299 can perform great but only if you break out of the "performance/dollar" mindset that is so prevalent in this community.

That's...not an argument. Ugh, at this point, there are only a few people keeping me interested in the forum. Dalekphalm, LawLz, MageTank, Drak3, Prysin, and a few others, because they actually make compelling arguments and don't simply defend or hate on a company based on their absurd preconceptions about it. For them, the evidence and reasoning come before the conclusion. For so many others, it seems to be the inverse.

Why is the God of Hyperdeath SO...DARN...CUTE!?

Value is dictated by both need and/or want. For an editing rig that uses AVX enabled soft, you know what Ryzen 7's value is? Pretty fucking small, lower than the 7700K and 7800X, both are in the same ballpark as the R7 1700 twins.

Otherwise, I can say the same exact thing about you using Mac.
