Howdy guys, I'm looking to setup a proxmox server with a windows VM and within windows I'll be setting up a tunnel to allow a minecraft server to be available. My question is, with a max of 20players on this server at once. And I want to future proof without breaking the bank. my hope is to setup something sub $500 that will allow my windows vm with a file share/mc server running + another proxmox vm and good headroom to add more servers if I wish. Although the servers will always be live and running the peak amount of users that will be connected to any mc server will doubtfully exceed 15 players at one time. What is the best path to take in your opinions? Should I stick with modern hardware or go with older xeons? Maybe start with an i5 12thgen and see how long that holds over till lag kicks in? Or switch to an older xeon platform start with a basic six core cpu and upgrade as is necessary?

Minecraft is, for the most part, single threaded. While picking, do not get attracted to more cores. Make your choice based on Single core power! 🙂

I thought that was just the game itself and not the servers 🤔 you think as long as I have the proper amount of ram and a decent CPU I should be fine? the plan is to have:

               Proxmox

                     ^

      Windows Server VM

                     ^

File Share + Crafty Controller

Id generally put the file server on a different vm from the minecraft server.

I'd look into linux for the MC server. Cheaper and typically better performance.

Server too! 🙂

The server version of minecraft is the "same" minecraft as the game version, just without the UI, graphics.
It's the same simulation.

So, yes. Decent (single thread performance-focussed) CPU and a solid amount of RAM.

I had considered going the debian > casaOS > craft controller but that felt to layered imo. Going with an Ubuntu mc server is something I've done for an extended period but I hated it. It wasn't easy to manage. Troubleshooting took far too long. And don't get me wrong I love linux but when having a server that carries more than just your world I want it to be as easy as possible. I will also be running a server in the near future for a discord server. And I want to use this as the trial run. Windows/Crafty controller is preferred because the Discord server owner will need to learn how to install mods n such without to much hassle on there. And linux doesn't make that easy for them.
