With the oculus rift + touch now for $400, is it finally worth it for a teenager to buy it?

Knaj

Title, essentially. I've been looking into VR for a while but the price drove me away. But now with such a low price, I can't help it but really think it is worth it. I'm considering buying it through best buy so I can return it if needed.

IMO, no. Not enough full content (majority is still just tech demo stuff) and it's still the first consumer release of VR, there's so many things that need to be improved that may take several generations of headsets.

I would keep the money and either spend it on something you know you'll want or save it for a somewhat more practical purchase like a car.

IMO, yes. You can play Robo Recall and mess around in UE4.

Then spend the $400 on a new GPU. Though my i5 2400 + 1050 Ti can run Unigine Superposition (med/low) with a minimum fps of 55 or something, max 100+.

I think it can run smoothly at 60fps though. Why would you need 90?

so you don't get sick and vomit don't post about vr when you don't have any experience with it

Yes for a game to run your PC has to be able to run 90fps constant or you will get sick

OK. Just wondering why. I'd think 60 would be good, though (alike you pointed out) I haven't really used VR. Might be able to run it on low though. I don't think you'll need super high quality textures when you're immersed in the world. Kind of like how you do t need AA  at 4K, since it's so sharp and immersive.

Did you run the Steam VR test? I'm not sure if a 290 will be good for VR

the oculus rift is only 1080p per eye and even with low quality textures vr is quite hard to keep up with since it needs to keep up with high speed and twitch movements

the 290 will work for stuff like the lab and other easier to run vr games though it's definitely not optimal

Don't teenagers still need to explain the elaborate Oculus Rift set up that they want to install in the living room as well as why the coffee table is now broken?
