Could Mining GPUs be used Externally for Gaming on Laptops?

Hey all,

 

In regards to the new mining-oriented GPUs being released, I'm confused as to what differentiates these from their gaming counterparts aside from missing video outputs?

 

If the answer is nothing, or just a very small regression of performance, would it be possible to save a few dollars and grab one of these with the intent of being used as an external GPU in an enclosure for a laptop (e.g. the Razer Core, Alienware Graphics Amplifier)? As in this scenario there would be no necessity for video outputs on the GPU as that would be handled by the laptop's built-in screen.

This is why Mining GPUs dont fix anything and actually end up making things worse

Why bother when mining cards only cost a few dollars less, if not more? Mining cards' resell value is much lower.

I guess if you were extremely strapped for cash. But if we are being honest... If you can afford a laptop that has a Thunderbolt 3 port and a $200 GPU enclosure, you can swing a few more bucks for the normal version of the card.

GPU: XFX RX 7900 XTX

CPU: Ryzen 7 7800X3D

If the resale value is so much lower, than that could be a potential steal buying one used. 

 

Not saying I'd do this personally, I'm just curious if the capability could be there.

If you can find someone stupid enough to buy them that is

 

And yes, it will work, but only on the laptop's screen.

 

I'm actually curious myself on whether adding a capture card besides a mining card will work?

It could be done but mining cards sell in batches of 10.  I'm actually thinking of picking up a mining 1070 in a year or so for the extra computation al power if they sell for cheap

Like @Jurrunio mentioned earlier, I can imagine the resale value being wayyyy lower than a traditional gaming card, It'll be cool to see how this all plays out in the next year (1070s sub-200 possibly?)

 

Maybe we'll just end up all throwing away our gaming cards and becoming slaves to mining o.O

biggest issue is that piping the  info back to the laptop actually degrades performance even more

mining cards aren't going to be cheaper and will only be obtainable via direct suppliers
