SUPER high ping times only on WIFI

Hello,

 

I am super confused in regards to how high my ping time is only on wireless connected devices. I expect to have a slightly higher ping time when I am using computers connected wirelessly, but not this high. I am getting around 200-1200ms in games. It first started last week when I was getting unplayable ping in Overwatch on my upstairs computer. I assumed that it was just becuase the connection was bad (even though I had almost full bars) so I set up my laptop as a repeater and placed it in between the computer and the router and still got the same ping. Today I went and pinged my router from CMD right next to my router with my laptop and I still get the same ping, I walk over to my wired main computer and get 1ms. I don't remember changing any settings in my router, but I went in and disabled QoS. Still there. Interference? Nope. No other wireless devices around, not even headphones or mice, I even turned off my phone to make sure. I am the only person on the network and I checked traffic manager to make sure that another computer wasn't hogging usage or anything, nothing.

It spits out some good pings but for the most part they are over 200ms

few things:

- what sort of <presumably wireless router> do you have?

- what sort of wifi solution does your computer have?

- what sort of distance is between them? (how many floors, walls, kitchen cabinets, beds, humans, and so on)

- what sort of speed are you getting on wifi? (speedtest)

I had a similar problem, it was caused by extreme package loss. Basically the connection between my PC and router just wasn't good enough, I solved it by buying powerline adapters.

Router: Asus RT-N66R, about a year old, in great condition and hung on the wall to stay nice and cool.

 

Wireless solution on devices: Although irrelevant becuase it was working before and the result is repeatable across multiple devices, the desktop has a TP-link N300 which is literally a month The laptops used while testing are all high end business class computers from Dell which I presume have very nice wireless solutions from Intel, though it's not worth my time to find out which exact model.

 

Distance: Test shown was in line of sight of the router with nothing in it's way. 

 

Speeds: I pay for 100 down 15 up from Cox communications. I'm getting about 2mb/s down on the wireless devices and I get 10.8 down on my wired devices (above advertised speeds :)).

 

This was not happening less than a month ago

Not an option for me. I need to be able to use my laptop around my house. Also, extreme packet loss from 5 feet away from router?

Interesting. Is it possible you are on a channel that is congested by your neighbors? What frequency are you using? (2.4GHz vs 5GHz). Also, I used to have that router; served me well.

Yea, love this router, bought one for work as well cuz it's the only router of mine thats lasted more than 5 months :P. Seriously, why are routers so bad? I checked not too long ago and my channel is very clear and no new wireless networks show up on my computer at all so I assume it should still be ok. I'll check again.

It doesn't have to be a new network. Existing networks change channels more often than you think. What frequency band are you using?

Try channel 11 or 8. Doesn't matter; just don't be that guy and use one of the channels in between. Is 5GHz better than 2.4GHz?

Man do I feel like an idiot. Moved to CH 11 and saw that 3 devices moved with me, figured out that it was my damn chromecast and my printer. Unplugged Chromecast and will change printer settings in the morning. I hardly use either and forgot about them. I think it's solved my problems. Pinged router and saw almost constant 3 ms. I'll see in the morning if it's really fixed. Thanks so much for the help mang!

i am customer service :D although not on this level tho.. the calls i usually get are a bit more "lives are at risk" than someone having bad ping on games :P
