Right now I've got an Intel Xeon E3 1240 running Windows 7 Pro. Windows 7 was one of the last versions of consumer Windows to be able to natively run on Itanium processors.

Are there any advantages an Itanium processor would have over my Xeon? The Itanium would be tasked with video rendering and large file transfers of 100GB a day to a network share.

Any input?

Problem is with itanium is that you can't just run win32 program on it, so most programs like premiere, chrome, steam and most other progams won't run unless there complied for itatium.

I don't think windows 7 ever had a itanium version, but server 2008r2 did which was mostly the same code.

Really don't bother with them, they were made to get pas the x86 limations, but failed due to the amount of sutff that has already been made for x86

Go with Xeon. You can't run normal applications with Itanium.

Cost of one is around $4,700 USD

Plenty here for far less than that

Windows 7 was fully compatible with Itanium and Itanium-based CPUs.

that is also a blade server that you need a enclosure for. And a anouther 20A circuit to run it on.

Can you show me a dvd for it, the normal i386 and x86_64 won't boot a itatium system.

Why are you even trying to argue in price with that stupid low end 1.6ghz server?!

Hey, since you seem to "know" everything, why not go any buy that damn thing.

Because I don't have the money right now.

If you seem to know more than I do, can you part me a 12 core Xeon machine for $550?
