Asus g501jw i7-4720hq GTX960m - High CPU heat under minimal load.

I just bought the computer 2nd hand, and it gets hot fast.

My problem is:
CPU is reaching throttle cap of 86c ish degrees in bare seconds after launching games like Smite and Rocket league. Which makes them almost unplayable. (Yes they both meet the requirements, and smite played well on my old cpu which is 7-8 times weaker in benchmark points) The cpu never reaches over 50% load due to getting to hot before this is even achievable.
Note: Gpu rearly goes over 78c and have never experienced gpu throttling.

Idle/browsing usage is around 50-65c depending on what power settings i use.(This is even with a cool-master cooling pad, even tho these are not expected to be VERY effective)

Aside from the CPU-heat climbing fast, there is no problems with the software or hardware from what i can tell.

Currently i'm using XTU to offset undervolt it -0,050V and limiting the cache and core ration at x26(stock ratio, at high performance power option turbo boost is automatically turned on to 3,6GHz)
This lowers the rate which heat is generated but still causes some noticeable stuttering during game-play.

I have installed and re-downloaded win10x64 several times, downloaded all the necessary drivers for the correct WinOS and bios from asus, aswell as turning the GTX to the main source of graphics and physx + turned the integrated intel gpu to performance(just in case it kicks in for whatever weird reason)
I also disabled the integrated gpu to test this further (it had no impact)

I have opened the back of the laptop to clean it from dust carefully with cloth and vacuum cleaner(which resulted in a slightly better outcome).

My conclusion is that the CPU is either weakened/damaged or the integrated cooling/paste isn't working as it should, cause I've never seen CPU heat rise so fast, from so little load.

I'm posting this here, in case someone here have similar experiences, know if this actually is a weird software related problem, or agrees with me that it's a hardware problem rather than a software one. I'm more than open for suggestions!

Hopefully it's just the thermal paste and that it needs to be replaced. Just ordered some and crossing my fingers.

I'd try replacing the thermal paste and (I hope you already did if it's used) a complete reinstall of Windows 10, boot-from-a-usb-and-format-everything-first style.

I was sloppy at that end, and did not install from a USB, as there where none available at the time. If not the paste works, then i'll get myself a usb later on.
I know i should for safety reasons, but can this actually cause my cpu to make more heat? I understand that if something is off it makes more load = heat. But what i'm experiencing is more heat per % load than i've experienced earlier with my computers and laptops.

My bad for being unclear, i was refering to having a bad win10 install. Was not refering to the paste.

Think it was a regular .exe, migh've been a iso.

But if you are asking if i installed it from a cd or usb in bootup, then no.

But then again, can this even be the cause of my problem?

so to ur question, yes. You need to completely erase your partition during the bootup via usb to get a clean install.

that startfresh tool is trash.

That wasn't ,really my question.
I was wondering if win10 actually can make these results.
As far as i know i see my problem as a heat% per load% is way to high. Usually if theres a software related problem, the load% is just high and generates normal high temperatures for a high load. But for me, it generates alot of head, from low load. Atm i'm just watching a utube video, and running at 65c.(the load is around 4-8% cpu usage.

that's not entirely unseen. But what I was saying using the startfresh tool can fuck up  your win10 and make these results.

also download hwinfo. download unigine heaven. post a screenshot of it here while you run it. show both the cpu and gpu temps and loads.

Will do!
In what configuration do you want these tests to run? With the untouched one, or the High performance setting with CPU capped to 26x with cpu volt offset -0,050V?

stock as possible. just looking to see if it's a thermal problem or software one.

Depends on your definition of stock.

Because not tweaking anything, enables the turbo boost to automaticly activate aslong as the power to cpu is 100% in win settings.

I can post 2 sets of images, and add a description.

The only thing i have configured here is to turn the power settings to "high performance"

I must add. When i first got the computer, after downloading all the necessary programs, I had the same stutter in Smite when running in bare minimum graphics settings and everything betweene and including the Geforce experienced recommended settings.

Also when running AIDA64 stress test, it stutters in milliseconds in the same powermode.
But gets a little bit better when tuned down.

I will try to recreate the same settings again and run your benchmark once more, even tho I don't think this is graphics related, at all.

you should do a clean reinstall. do not use the startfresh too. install via usb and clean all the partitions.

It sounds like an odd solution to me(and yes iknow alot of odd bugs have odd fixes), but it's better than nothing. Just cant see how low load can make high heat due to a bad install, if it even is.

Do you, or anyone else have a opinion about this case?

Everything is freshly installed from USB stick now, and every Hdd/ssd reformated before installing the OS on the ssd, no improvements.

He needs some Kryonaut

Ain't nothing else I can say that I don't always say: NEVER buy an ASUS laptop second hand, and it should be one of your last choices firsthand.

Also, thermal throttling a CPU at 86c is very low.

I have finally moved to a desktop. Also my guides are outdated as hell.
