God I have the worst luck.  My brand new to me 1070 seahawk is finally with me and a capaciter has fallen off...  after very carefully removing the waterblock it just fell off.  Not sure what it is for but meesa worried big time.

It SEEMS to be off on the corner of the PCB doing nothing but fan control but I'm a noob when it comes to chokes, capaciters and PCB in general.  It appears to still be in perfect condition as well.

Lol thanks in advance.

I would just contact MSI unless you're confident in your soldering skills.

you realize that you would have had to break the warranty sticker to get the cooler off. unless you were one of those people who use a pair of pliers to get the screw off

I didn't use pliers but it still looks in good condition.

Lame of you to suggest that. By a cheap soldering iron and some solder. Buy a replacement capacitor I am sure the value is on the one you removed. Soldering isn't too hard. Just practice a couple times before you attempt on the graphics card and don't mess up ;)

Again, total solder noob here but it seems the capaciter is fine.

I am dumb. Those look like bga. Time for a heat gun or an oven. Set the capacitor on top in the correct orientation and heat er up.

Fak that is absolutely last resort right there.

I'm kinda pissed with MSI for having a warranty void sticker on a waterblock card >:(

Well I think you would have to heat up the balls some way to get the capacitor back on. Yeah the warranty void sticker is dumb. I don't think my evga cards have them at least my 780 doesn't.

@Damascus

Buy a chisel tip soldering iron (look for the yihua ones and just buy a 20¢ chisel tip)

Get some flux

Flux each side of the cap and PCB pads

14989605624931793348984.thumb.jpg.b4af00c4a7720cbd2b1f5d1ecebbbb49.jpg

Just touch the soldering iron on each side until the solder melts, add a bit more solder to each side

The solder should flow onto each lead of the cap and pad, making an electrical connection

Done

Alternatively you could send it to me for the price of return shipping, and I'll fix it free if you aren't comfortable doing it yourself

That would be a piece of cake to solder back into place, if you know what you're doing, and have the tools. If you don't, make sure you either learn how to solder properly first, or take it to an electronics repair centre. It would probably take a repair centre less than 1 minute to solder that back into place, but be aware that some repair centres charge a minimum service fee, which could be like $40. Ask on the phone beforehand to see what a store's policy is - and ask if they can make an exception for your single capacitor that needs to be soldered if they want a crazy amount for the job.

Also, don't poke around on the board if you don't have to, and discharge electricity from your body by touching some larger and grounded metal surface, like maybe your PC case, for a few seconds. The static from your body can cause damage to sensitive electronic components. I have both temporarily damaged, and permanently damaged some expensive equipment I was working on before, due to static damage.

I wouldn't do the oven thing, as chemicals from the board's electrical components can release into the oven, which will then get into food that's next cooked in there.

Wow, thanks for the awesome step by step instructions. I already have an iron, I would just need the tip.

Now I would love to send it to you but I think it would cost waaay too much as the msrp on the damn thing is like 600 USD or something like that and shipping it will likely cost more then 100 bucks (especially from up here in the frozen north, eh?)

Yeah I wouldn't recommend it either. But if someone was desperate enough it *might* work.

Yeah, where do you suggest I nab my Flux/solder from?  There is a local store that sells Arduino parts and circuit boards etc. so I'm pretty sure they have solder.  What is a good price?
