Not the 3gb Version, 970 and 1060 3gb have about the same Performance 

zotac 970 ~ 250$ and zotac 1060 3GB ~ 266 according to the us Amazon store, but Keep in mind the 970 has a bit more vram

FWIW, the rest of my PC is an i5-6600k @ 4GHz and I use a 1440p Qnix monitor that caps out around 110hz.  So no freesync or G-sync but I'm definitely bottlenecked by gpu.

Ya the 290x and cards like that are also good for mining.

 

It seems like the only cards that are well stocked are 1050ti's and then 1070's and above

I dont think ist allowed to post links but if you check Amazon you will find some 970's and 1060's

Ya I just found a lightly used 980 for $240 on Craigslist that I think i will get.

980 for $240 isn't actually a great deal, but it's decent. Reference 980s are like $270 new lol

The cheapest GTX 980 i can find is 400? and it is founders edition

I dont think ist that bad since modern games that use more than 3gb vram will just dont Show textures or Show them in a lower Quality if you dont have enough vram, a freind of mine is running a 1060 3 GB with a i7 6700 and he can Play Tom Clancy's The Division on High or Very High presets and according to him it Looks stunning, didnt see it on his rig myself tho.

 

But in General you are right, 6 GB would be better since games will Need more vram in the future rather than less.

The 3GB is a slower card than the 6GB, less CUDA cores and lower clocks. The 6GB is more of a 1060 Ti

Yup the 3GB should be the 1060 and the 6GB the 1060 Ti
