Please Review this Linus

I was on youtube and saw a video about this product http://www.gearbest.com/laptop-accessories/pp_229101.html

 

I thought it was extremely interesting, but all the videos I have seen have only shown the after. They didn't do a good review of things like how much performance gains there were and they didn't test different gpus and things like that. I think this would be a fantastic product for LinusTechTips to review on a Holy$hit episode for cheap gaming or something if it actually works well. It would be interesting to see how it goes. Please give it a shot. Sorry if I am breaking any forum rules.

I highly doubt it would perform decently, seeing how little bandwidth Mini PCIe has compared to PCIe 3.0 8x or 16x.

But it still could make for an interesting video.

Also external GPU docks are terrible, will severely bottleneck almost anything you put in.

except the Alienware Graphics amp, it's decent only because of the proprietary interface

They arent terrible, This will work at PCIe x1, x2 at most depending on how the mini PCIe port is configered.

 

I used to game on a thinkpad using a gtx 580 as an eGPU last time, it was at PCIe x1 v1.1 so the bandwidth bottleneck is there but other than loading times if i attached a monitor to the GPU i could game at 1080p playing batman and other games fine at 50-60 fps. If i tried to play a game and render it on my laptop screen (laptop had nvidia but you can select an openGL GPU to render and it will send to your main screen. Only at the smaller resolutions (even smaller than 720p) was feasable.

this is definitely cheaper than my eGPU adapter, mine costed $100 but did come with some safety. At one time i used a GPU that i had accidently short circuited (never use ribbon PCIe extenders, some can be fickle on the welding), theoratically however it shouldnt short circuit as it was one of asus directCUII GPUs as it should take power from PCIe as a second source not main source and was used with my laptop dock as it had a PCIe slot but extender was needed as it was a single slot half length PCIe. So the GPU had already blown, i used it with my eGPU adapter and the GPU continued to blow but the adapter still works fine.

 

I think what really matters is the design of the adapter, from the power to other things. Make sure it comes with a dummy connector for the ATX PSU you intend to use with it as you need some way to power it on without using the shorting trick.

 

mini PCIe has the same bandwidth as PCIe, the only difference is the physical and electrical specification. The most it offers is 2 lanes i think, the version depends on the host and the adapter (adapter only has to follow the electrical specification).
