Upgraded my Linux box to Mine Ethereum

Hi all,

 

Thought I'd share my journey into mining (in general).  Before my trip to Singapore over the weekend, I started mining using the only GPU I had on hand - my GTX1080 in my productivity rig and shared some of my experiences in a blog post.  This let me toy around with running miners in windows and linux (I'm a Cloud dev/architech so I prefer linux for 99.99999-anything).  Well, I'm now back from my holiday and picked up these two GTX1070

As I got back, I dropped these into the linux box and straight away got the reported 52Mh/s performance others were seeing.

I may switch this over to ZCash, but I'm in the process of setting up a TREZOR hardware wallet for that first.

if you have a place for it its fine.. dont forget you'll be running that 24/7 if you want to mine something, and with that comes room heat problems, electric bill etc, I tried and.. I felt its just a waste of time, with 2x1070 you'll be making some money but don't expect to get rich btw... before making money you must pay for the 2 cards and all bills... then you'll be making real profit

Indeed - I've estimated around 450W and crunching said numbers gives me about $200/mo having covered electricity costs close to $90/mo.  It'll take me over 4 months to 'break-even' on the cost of the cards alone.  Anything beyond that would be gravy.

You can fine tune those 1070s.  I can't remember right off my head on how to control the voltage or power draw in Linux.

 

Here a little guide on mining with cards I just came across today.

This using Afterburner, but should be a way to do power draw control in Linux as well.

1 way to reduce the wattage is to downclock the cpu, lower the voltage and disconnect everything that is not needed, if you wont be using that computer for anything else

I'm able to get ~30Mh/s per 1070 for 100W with a 65% power limit, +1300 Mhz memory OC.

Quick update, I've added more cards to the mix.  Right now, I'm using the same 2x systems I previously mentioned (the Skylake Z170 box, and the 6850K/X99 box) with this config:

 

  • 1x GTX 1080 Founders Zotac
  • 2x GTX 1070 EVGA Superclocked black
  • 1x GTX 1060 EVGA FTW

I also bought a second 1060 FTW, but with the above 4-card config my hash rate on ethermine is ~108 Mh/s avg (see attached)

Before accounting for power costs, this is the rough projections at DAG epoch 131 (yes, this will reduce in the future, but the 1070s have shown to be fairly resilient, even when benchmarking at epoch 180).
