Reasons to buy Intel

10 hours ago, VagabondWraith said:

money is no issue here

That does not justify dumping double the amount of dollars just because you love Intel, you could get a 1700 and clock it to 1800x levels. At this point the 7820x would be 100% more expensive, and something like 30% more powerful.

But then again, I am not here to dictate how you have to spend your own money. Just realise that Intel does not care about you, but only about your wallet.

(Not that AMD cares about us, but they are definitely providing more performance per dollar).

Im upgrading to the 7820X because it will have better performance than what else I could consider. Knowing Skylake has a better uplift over Ryzen, it's an easy choice and money is no issue here. 8c/16t is perfect for my needs.

Really not different than someone who buys a 1080 over a 1070, or Titan Xp over 1080 Ti, or at the time, a 980 over 970. For some, that extra perf is justified no matter how big or small the difference may be.

I won't entertain Threadripper because I have absolutely no reason for 16c. I have no uses for it. It's a great option for those who do need it, just not for me.

This next upgrade will do me good for a minimum 5 years plus. I'll jump onboard the 8c hype train while I can. :D

Don't sweat the small shit bud.  @Jumper118 only uses PCs for the purposes of benchmarking.  Literally that's it.  3dMark FireStrike is his favorite game.  :D

With that said, he sticks with AMD chips and very old Intel chips because they are cheap.  Then he straps them to a $1k phase cooling bench setup and pushes the shit out of them for competitions on HWBOT.  Then all of the guys on HWBOT using higher end Intel parts wreck his shit and he starts posting in LTT about how much Intel sucks.  You see the cycle?  xD

We all have preferences in different things and there is no issue with preferring Intel or AMD.  You'll usually find that those who make a big deal of that have much stronger bias then that of your own.  Could you imagine if we analyzed "value" in everything we purchased in life?  Some of the people who talk about price to performance with regards to PCs turn around and blow money on the dumbest shit outside of the electronics.  We only see their "value" discussions on PCs because there a media for delivery, LTT.

Chances are the if you can afford to buy the parts that you have, you've done something right somewhere else is your financial planning so if you want to celebrate a little of your success as I do, then have at it bud.  You deserve it.  I'm pretty sure if you were to dig a little into the finances of those who spend a lot of time judging, you'd find some unwise spending.

....and maybe the limited availability of mITX Boards for AM4...

This was the reason for me to build a system on the cheap last month.

Also, the boards are cheaper at the moment on Intel side in terms of mITX. Intel mITX boards start at $60, and the CPU's can be found cheaper used. There are virtually no used AM4 processors to be had yet, and the mITX boards are non-existent, except for the $109 Biostar board, which is only sold by Newegg and always out of stock. I have never actually seen it in stock the last 2 months, and I am signed up to receive notifications on it!

If AMD gets their act together a bit on mITX motherboards and RAM support compatibility, I think yes, most people would be better off with an AMD system probably.

I hope Intel will respond by finally getting some Hyperthreading onto the i5's, and bumping up the i7 core counts to 6,8 and more for the mainstream platforms. Yeah we have seen all the new X299 platform stuff, but that is not relevant to most consumers. I want to see Intel bring out some more cores for the sub $300 CPU's in the next generation.

Pentium G4560 is helluva chip for $60, and the K processors are a bit like the stock car race cpu's that were the FX 9K's.  Basically Intel and AMD swapped places from two years ago.

That's just performance comparisons, but Intel's features range from irrelevant to my needs to not even useful.  If threadripper motherboards begin to come in server variants (with ECC support), it could actually be a pretty big blow to intel.  Right now still, nothing can touch xeon for that reason.

But if you're buying a laptop or tablet, intel is still sort of your only option.  They simply have a better architecture and R&D for that.
