4k @ 60hz or 1440p @ 165hz?

I have a 1080ti and an i5 7600k, so i've got plenty of horsepower to run 4k, would i be better off with the 1440p resolution with a much higher refresh rate?

Depending on the game, I'd personally go for the 1440p165 over 2160p60 (aka: 4K 60)

your going to have a bottle neck of the 7600k at those resolutions you will need to upgrade your CPU to get the high refresh rates but you will not get 60hz at max setting on 4k

Meet in the middle at 3440x1440 @ 100hz imo

Wrong.

 

Lower resolutions are easy for graphics cards, so the limiting factor is how fast your CPU can calculate data. Higher resolutions stress the graphics card so the CPU isn't the limiting factor

Well, Fallout 4 is basically locked at 60fps natively though with config tweaks you can run it at 120+fps (that's easy enough to find with a search on like Google), I'm not sure about Witcher 3.

 

Playing a game in first-person perspective (like most shooters) the higher framerates tend to make the gameplay more smoother and less jittery, and high-action third-person games like Diablo 3, StarCraft 2 & even WoW can REALLY benefit from the higher framerates.

Turn-based games such as Civilization 5 don't benefit *as much* from extreme framerates as real time/action games do.

 

Basically higher framerates + lower frametimes = smoother gameplay and experience & less jarring if you lose like 1-in-150 frames. Compared to lower framerates + higher frametimes where losing even just 1 frame in 50 can be noticeable and jarring.

It's slightly more expensive than your GPU. Don't you want to get the most out of your investment?

 

Your monitor should cost the same or slightly more than your video card.

Would AOC 35" AGON Curved LED G-Sync AG352UCG be a good bet for a ultrawide panel? It's 3440x1440 100hz, and not too pricey either

It's a decent option. In retrospect: I only say that because their QC isn't the greatest. Also, there's other alternatives besides g-sync too if you're that concerned about your budget.
