Asus is preparing to launch another one of their portable monitor call The ZenScreen MB16AC.The monitor is a 15.6" LED display with a IPS panel, 60Hz refresh rate, and a resolution of 1920x1080. Powering and video signal, is all driven by a single USB C connector, where it can also supports DisplayPort over USB C, as well as USB Type A, with the included adapter cable. It also comes with a protective cover which acts as a kick stand, to allow viewing in horizontal or portrait mode. Users who do not want to use the protective cover as a kickstand, can also hold up the display by inserting the bundled Asus ZenScreen pen or any other pens, into the hole located at the bottom right side of the monitor. With the monitor marketed as portable, the Asus ZenScreen comes in with a thickness of just 8.0mm, weighs 780 grams, and has a power consumption of 8w or less. Other features includes Asus Flicker-Free technology as Blue Light filter. No words on price yet.

There is a pen so I assume it is somewhat a touchscreen too?

as far as I can tell it is NOT touchscreen, I think it is just a branded normal pen so you can use it as a stand. the video on their site shows no indication that the pen works with the screen other then it being a stand. It would be awesome if they made a touch enabled version.

also I wounder can it be power off a standard DP port, if you use a DP to USB-C cable? If so this would be awesome, if not that sucks for backwards compatibility.

Ah I see now. It would be nice if that protective cover can have some sort of room to place the pen too to place it horizontally cause placing in that hole is awkward and also might not be really stable from one side

Perfect for that new MSI 1080 Ti.

it would make some sense if you had that GPU in a SFF PC for LANs and used that screen at LANs. BUT please don't use it as your main screen.

I hope it will work off the power a normal DP port can output.

Well we need a small 1080 Ti first, most of the 1080Ti now are quite huge

BAD NEWS, this device uses <8W DP standard supports up to 1.5W so officially it will not work but if you are lucky it may work if the screen uses less power and the port is able to feed a bit more. ;-;

I'm thinking with this monitor, maybe there is no need for laptop. Just get a Brix or something similar with much powerful specs and this monitor. the only downside is the need for a power cord to power the desktop. Maybe a ultra high capacity power bank will do the job of powering up the desktop?

I was think of a Case mod to add the screen into the side panal of a SFF machine. I had a 8" iPad gen 4 screen in my case connected to my GPU's displayport. haven't used it in a long time and now it is dead ;-;

My idea was being able to take this while traveling and still having a powerful desktop machine.

I would absolutely love this...if they made a 13.3" version, and made it thicker with a built in battery for power.

With how thin displays are I'm surprised no one's made a laptop with 2 screens. One tucked behind the other, that slides up or over. Asus is the Samsung of the laptop game. Get on it.

Agree with that, but you can't customize your parts on a laptop, like changing the cpu. :D

There already is a prototype (I think by Razer or someone like that).

If cheap enough, this screen can be useful, although it's a niche market.

Asus taichi 21......They did it back in 2012

I guess this kind of monitor will be very handy for business. You can duplicate your screen to show the client instead of turning your laptop round and round

Yeah, that gaming behemoth thing? Not interested if it's going to come from them. It'll be over priced and lack in fit and finish.

They go for more of a gamer market.

I think it's around $250. Niche, yes, but it's pretty simple so I'm sure their margins will be good. Though the same can't be said for their ZenWatch line xD

Ohhh gotcha, something that doesn't exist yet. It'd be interesting with say one of the Brix's that come with a 1060. It'd be more than enough to power the 60hz screen. I wonder how latency is though...

Me neither, just saying someone did spot that possibility :P

It would be interesting to see someone come up with a leaner version more oriented to designers and other screen real estate junkies. Although there is an issue with adding screens and battery life, so I'd expect the current thinness frenzy to delay its implementation out side ultra-non-portable gaming "laptops" for now.

USB-C 3.1 (which is required to support Displayport Alt-Mode) provides up to 15W of power (5V at 3A) without Power Delivery.

Most laptops with a USB-C port that supports Displayport Alt-Mode should be compatible, at least as long as they're complaint.

Because DisplayPort Alt-Mode rides on top of the USB cable it can take advantage of the higher power levels provided by the USB port.

Also something to note: This monitor has dual-support for raw Displayport via Alt-Mode as well as for DisplayLink. So if you have a laptop that either has USB-A ports only, or a USB-C port that doesn't support DisplayPort Alt-Mode you can still use it, just with the normal limitations that DisplayLink imposes.

What I stated before was using a DP to USB-C cable, but DP only supports 1.5 watts which is in theory no enough to run this screen, so it does not have backwards compatibility. either hope it works or you need to inject power into a DP to USB-C cable.
