Does compressing lower down the size of the files?

Hey family... 

I have a NAS which I made out of an old computer but I have only 160GB of HDD in it...  I have a lot of important files and pictures... So is compressing the solution for saving space on the drive...

Yes, that is literally the definition of the word "compress'.

Sometimes, but yes. The degree of decrease depends on the compression algorithm and the original file size.

If you were hoping that your files would be safe on a single 160gb HDD (I am assuming 1 HDD) in a NAS. You are wrong. As for the compression side it will depend on the file size, file type and any compression that is already applied. This is a solution though personally, I'd prefer to pick and choose what I sort saving space where I can.
