IMO 7.1 is just a useless headset/headphone feature.

Always turned the setting off for 7.1 if the option was avaliable.

Astro A40's treated me well until I got sick of them, never had 7.1 tuned on them.

Got myself a pair of HD 559's instead, such an improvement.

The best 7.1 Headphone is the one that can disable the feature and not use 7.1.

In all seriousness:
Astro A40's did me well the time I used them.

Heard well from the Logitech G series headset 7.1 series as well.

But to me I just found the sounds inconsistent with them turned on.

Footsteps was hard to track with it on in games like CSGO whilst turning it off made it clearer. Ironically.

Why do you 2 think it's a bad feature? I've always found it useful in games and made movies nicer.

it's just software based. Any headphone can be made to a "7.1 headphone" because non really are 7.1

The difference is that 7.1 Headphones are just a gimmick and "gamery" while real Stereo Headphones actually have quality in both build and sound. Whats your budget?

No budget, as said in the original post my question is pure curiosity. It can be as expensive or cheap as you want.

Generally speaking the more money you throw at it, the better it gets. At least with reputable brands like Sennheizer, AudioTechnica, etc. However, audio is the most subject thing compared to everything else. So the is no 'best' for everyone.

7.1 only makes sense when the speakers aren't covering your ears. You've only got 2 ears so you only need 2 speakers.

In original post I said in your opinion, wasn't asking for a generalized one for everyone.

Well, I don't have or use all the many headphones on a daily basis but I'll go with my trusty old Sennheiser pc-363d for the Headphone category. Daily drivers though are the momentums but then I got Pioneer CS-51 and A-333 amp for desktop. So all over the place in terms of cost.

Best headphones in general would be the one with the best quality overall, like @APasz said:
"Generally speaking the more money you throw at it, the better it gets."

It's kind of true except when it comes to branding in some cases like Beats. There are headphones that Linus tested that are supposedly beyond human hearing, "perfect sound".

I think they went for about 50k or something.

7.1 vs 2.1 doesn't necessarily give better or more accurate sound.

Most 2.1 headphoes has better/equal sound tracking to 7.1 headsets/phones I've tried.

I've never had better tracking with ANY headphones/headsets than I have with my HD 559's.
