Posted April 19, 2017 The title says it all. I'm looking for an upgrade from my 8350, and I'm going into game development. I plan to use Unreal Engine 4, Unity, and the Cry Engine. As of now, I'm looking at a few. Mainly the 1700x or the i7-7700k. I wouldn't be opposed to paying extra for a 1800x, but much more is too expensive. Posted April 19, 2017 UE4 and Unity seem to like fast memory, fast cores, and physical cores. Cry Engine seems to like hyper-threading and frequency. I'd go with the 1700X or 7700K depending on the overall build that you make. Posted April 19, 2017 It depends on what their compilers prefer. However I would like to think everyone's compilers are multi-threaded so more cores would be better for faster iteration times. Posted April 19, 2017 a i7 or a xeon or anything modern with more than 4 cores is sufficent enough for game developing, except fx cpus, that shit will mess you up. The geek himself. If your choice is between the 5820K (389 USD) or Xeon 1650-V4 (583 USD), the 5820K would be better from the price perspective as both chips have similar performance. The Xeon 1680-V4 would be a better choice still as it has two more physical cores with HT and at the same clock. Unfortunately, it costs an arm and a leg at (1723 USD).
