So I'm on a budget, and I have the choice of a 120GB SSD or a 1TB HDD. Later on (few months) if I get a SSD, I can add a HDD. All I need the SSD for is to load windows and some programs on it. But do I really need the SSD? I wouldn't bloat my computer with crap and I would set nothing to open on startup even with the SSD because my OCD only allows the programs I'm using to be open anyways. Is a SSD really worth it for my use case?

SSD boot time and application responsiveness is night and day compared to HDDs. I will never build another PC without one personally...

I just shifted from HDD-only to SSD+HDD. Bootup times are way faster, but at least in my case I don't shut my computer down, I just turn the monitor off at night so don't really notice that. Responsiveness is better on an SSD, but if you let the HDD settle (1 minute or so on the desktop after a cold boot) it's pretty usable.

If you really need the storage, go for a hard drive now, get an SSD later, not that big of a deal. But if you can make do with 120GB of storage for a while, then definitely get the SSD first.

I would say HDD first. Make a partition for 240GB and use that for the OS. The rest can be used for mass storage. Afterwards, buy yourself a larger SSD and do a clean install or clone the 240GB partition.

if you can afford it, buy a ssd first, then get a HDD. Makes much more sense because an SSD is night and day faster than an HDD.

Desktop: You can sort of get away with only a HDD. Not the best experience

Laptop: Only have a HDD? Be prepared for massive problems down the road. Laptops are meant to be abused and thrown around into bags, etc. Abuse that kills HDDs but don't bother SSDs.

and then there is my media center that reboots within a minute off of a block of spinning rust. i'd MUCH rather have a terabyte of slower storage, than have barely enough to fit one or two games.

if you go SSD, go 240GB or bigger, 120GB SSDs are freaking small, and terrible value compared to 240GB.
