Should I get a badass graphics card?

I'm a part time gamer but my rig is not up to the mark. Upgrading to a newer decent rig will cost about $2000 which is alot over budget. So should I get a 1080 to or some other top notch card so that it comes handy whenever i upgrade in the future? Help please!!!!!!!

It will depend on your budget.

What resolution are you playing at? If 1080p, get a used GTX 970.

I would say get a 390 or 290 because of the VRAM issues.

It's literally not a big deal at all. I've had a 970 forever and it crushes everything I throw at it at 1080p.

But still, in my region of Vancouver (IDK about others) they are about the same price and I'm pretty sure the 390 was better than the 970 in performance.

Don't bother with old cards. Get a rx480 or a 1060 6gb over a 290 or 970.

I guess that works too, but I would imagine that the 970 would be cheaper as it is an older card.

nah, 970s go for around 300 for some reason. 480s can go as low as 200

They are going for more because people want to sli them so people charge more for them. This happened with the OG Titans and Titan black gpus. Happened majorly with the rare EVGA 6gb 780 cards.

I just found 18 970s on Ebay currently sitting under $200. Check the link I posted above.

The 970 kills it at 1080p, and is usually playable at 1440. IIRC, the 970 and rx480 were about equal in performance, OP should get whichever they can find for the least amount of money.

I wanted to get a rig with an i5 7600k but that's in the distant future so just thinking about getting a high end card now and just getting a new rig later and putting the graphic card in.

Would it be ideal tho?

Or should I get a cheap ass card like the 1050 to and call it a day?

Depends on the game. For modern titles hell no. My 1060 6gb OC to a stable 2000mhz can't even manage 60fps in 1440p with high settings in modern games. Other than that why bother buying used when for 200 you can't get a better GPU like the 480 or the 1060.

playable =/= 60fps. We really should be asking OP what resolution they're playing at.

I beg to differ. My 980ti has trouble getting 60+FPS in GTA V 1440p at ultra settings.

If your playing at under 60 with settings under at least high that's almost console level playability. Unless you have gsync. Which I would say why bother with used when you can buy new?

Agreed that and the fact that your better off spending the little extra and buying a newer GPU that has more V ram. A lot of the games now use more then 3.5gb of ram in 1080p high/ultra.
