LinusTechTips Youtube comments section, on or off?

Yea yea I know another thread about the bloody Youtube comments section

But the reason I ask this one is because so many Youtubers have turned off their comments section, 1) in protest and 2) to protect their viewers from viruses and abuse.

Here is a few Youtubers who have turned off their comments section:

  • PewDiePie (15.5M)
  • Smosh (13.5M)
  • Machinima (9.9M)
  • CaptainSparklez (5.9M)
  • MinnesotaBurns (2.0M)
  • TotalBiscuit (1.3M)
  • OfficialNerdCubed (1.3M)
  • Slyfox (1.1M)
  • Onision (1.0M)
  • NobodyEpic (0.99M)
  • YOGSCAST Martyn (0.92M)

That is 53.32 M and that is just mainly the gamers, The Ellen show (7.2M) has disabled comments and there will be more to come. While the Youtube comments section was a disaster it was still usable but now? I was watching the latest upload about the be Quiet heatsink and went to comment and then realised I did not want to so went to the forum thread for that vid. While I was commenting I was also thinking why not use this as an opportunity to promote the forum?

I think comments could be disabled and then a link placed (high enough so it could be seen without having to expand) saying "Comments disabled, comment here on our forums"

I know that there might be an element of spam at the start but the mods will deal with that quickly and forum accounts are harder to just create over and over plus the forum can IP ban and should be able to MAC address ban also which will cut down on the bullshit.

Any thoughts? Constructive ones guys, we all know that everyone hates the new comments section way more than the old comments section we already hated. Please do not turn this into a bitch fest

I don't mind the new comment section if it would be civilised and not full of stupid "Bob" comments -_-

Yes, that is probably the most important aspect. I know that most of his viewers are tech interested but I have come across some impressive morons with tech knowledge and I can imagine how quickly a virus would spread should it be linked on the right channel

Well viruses doesn't sound good, but I wonder why people post those bob comments. To my mind you can still express your opinion on the video with the comments and you reply and etc. Is all of this sh£t a product of the g+integration because I can't see wy the comments themselves would cause all this crap what's going on there

There's something you guys don't realize... Millions of comments have been made after the update that are longer than the 500 character limit and links have also been posted. How is Google going to delete all the comments and revert back? This is by far the biggest fuck up Google has ever done.

Well I can't comment either way, I have deleted my Google+ account several times in the past and I'm not going to start using one now. With all the screamer/bob/dick spam going on the comments are basically useless at the moment. Also who's idea was it to have comments ranked by the amount of replies?

Honestly I don't really know the answer to this. I don't know if we can fix this, I don't know if Linus disabling comments will fix it, I don't know if PewDiPie, Smosh, or TB can fix it either. But I do know google CAN fix it, but I don't know if they will fix it.

The new layout of the comment section is better than it was before, though in saying that Youtube's comment section as a whole was a waste of everyone's time even before they changed everything. Such an open and accessible place to comment is always going to be garbage, I don't understand why anyone cares, don't waste your time. The only difference is that it's now full of idiots spamming Bobs' army, instead of 'first', 'suck a dick', piping in with their useless comment of <10 words or having some otherwise pointless argument that turns into childish insults where each party doesn't seem to know what they are talking about, case in point.

Don't want Google+? Then don't comment on Youtube, all these Bob's army idiots failed their protest when they agreed to signup to Google+ in order to post that crap.

With the forum, I don't think we need to have comments turned on.  The people that really want to comment on a video can come to the forum to comment on it.  That would keep some spammers out of the comments.

Turning them off isn't really any different from having them be full of stupid crap. Either way you don't have to look at them.

So rather than hurt my own search rankings and prioritization to "send a message" to Google about something about which they're already FULL WELL AWARE, I'll just leave it there.

They'll fix it eventually, and this way I won't have to go back and manually re-enable comments on those videos (yay)

Do we want to read BS spam comments or do we want to read nothing at all? Hmmm well both seem to have pretty much the same effect so...it doesnt really matter.

Exactly. just because 50 ppl want to turn the comment section of this doesn't mean that you should do it.

You still have left hundreds of thousands of subscribers who might want to ask a question in the comment section rather than having to come here and make an account and post one single question :D

Completely agree, just a lot of work for Linus. You don't need to look at the comments if they are always full of sh*t, just ignore them and watch another video.
