Quantum World Record Crushed

qwertywarrior

An amazing key barrier toward quantum computing has been crushed for a new world record time of 39 minutes! This normally fragile quantum state has been shown to survive for the 39 minutes to be crowned the new world record. This was accomplished by an international team that included Stephanie Simmons of Oxford University UK.

The team reported on this test performed by Mike Thewalt from Simon Fraser University Canada. Other colleagues help to perform this amazing test. In today's world, computers store data in strings of 1's and 0's. In this experiment "qubits" were put into a "superposition" which allows the quantum computer to to perform multiple calculations simultaneously by doing both 1's and 0's at the exact same time.

In order for the team to perform this experiment they raised the temperature of the nuclei of phosphorus atoms in silicon from -269 C to a balmy 25 C in which it lasted a record breaking 39 minutes. Before this amazing experiment it was recorded to only last about two seconds!

this means it can play and not play crysis at the same time for 39 minutes  !

I have no idea what this is but it must be cool because Crysis was mentioned.

Quantum computing must be done at very cold temps to avoid quantum decoherence. These guys were able to do it at basically room temperatures... and for a long while.

I don't see how this is difficult to comprehend. I think most people have the capability to understand it they just choose to not try and make a joke about it. If I'm not incorrect in stating, this is my interpretation of the post:

Normal Computers Can Be Either 1 or 0 (on or off)

Quantum Computers Can Be On & Off at the Same Time

Because Of This It was Believed to have to be done at colder temperatures, now they were able to do it near room temperature, and not only that but extend the duration by which it was on.

I believe this is the basic understanding of it. Clarify if I'm wrong.

so it did 2+2 multiple times on that exact moment for 39 minutes... damn that's a lot of 4...

this is one of the greatest thing that has happened to me recently, and it happened on this forum, those involved have my eternal gratitude http://linustechtips.com/main/topic/198850-update-alex-got-his-moto-g2-lets-get-a-moto-g-for-alexgoeshigh-unofficial/ :')

i use to have the second best link in the world here, but it died ;_; its a 404 now but it will always be here

then... we get weather forecast years ahead

NOPE!

To be able to create weather simulations this far ahead into the future, about specific days, years ahead, not only do we need computers that run this simulation, but the data we collect and plug into these computers must be extremely bigger and more accurate than what we do today. Developing such powerful sensors for satellites to read this extremely big and accurate data about what goes on into the atmosphere is not really worth it.

The best we would be able to do is predict big weather changes (as they are more obvious to detect) on a certain period (no more accurate than 1 week) few years ahead. Example: "A giant typhoon will hit northern Gulf of Mexico around mid July 2016"

Still, quite valuable, we would be able to prepare for tsunamis, typhoons, floods, and major droughts a lot better.
