Hi all,

Planning a new rig for a friend around the $800 pricepoint. He's mainly playing Overwatch at 1080p60fps, so I thought a 480 would be plenty here. He's going to buy the parts in separate bulk purchases over the span of a few months so I'll mainly just be choosing parts based on deals at the time. He's going for a semi-flashy black and red theme. Here's what I'm looking at now:

PCPartPicker part list: https://pcpartpicker.com/list/fFVxCy

Some parts like the GPU and SSD are from Jet and I manually entered the price including discounts.

I also saw this deal on Reddit and it looked interesting, although I'm not sure if this PSU is decent or if 450W is enough:

Thoughts?

Could save your friend a buck and just scrap the cooler.

Is $35 not cheap? I can't imagine it getting much cheaper for a decent air cooler. I have a 212 Evo but the silver heatsink looks kinda bleh to me.

I know the PSU on my list is good, but if the second one I listed is decent as well I'd rather do that since it's only $20

Looks like a solid build. Could save yourself some $$ and go for the 4GB RX 480. At 1080P 8GB is a bit overkill.

~future proofing~

yeah, probably not needed especially for overwatch.

tbh if he is waiting to buy parts over time then there is no reason not to wait and see what the knew r5 series cpus do because there is a real possibility they will be a better buy than a locked i5. if they turnout to be not as good of a value as the locked i5 then no harm done and you can continue with the i5 build.

Could he just buy everything except CPU and mobo then? I think a locked i5 will be plenty though, my i5 4460 Haswell does fine for 1080p 144hz gaming.

i have no doubt that the locked i5 will be enough for there needs but if you can get better for the same money why wouldn't you? it comes out next week so its not like you have to wait all that long to figure out. plus if it gives similar gaming performance but has more cores and threads that means the r5 will be able to do more if need be.

Sounds good, I'll probably just buy the PSU, RAM, and case tonight then.

Can I assume it'll use DDR4?

yes it for sure will use ddr4. how fast it will run will effect the performance at 1080p but it likely wont be as significant with the rx 480 so you should be fine but i would recommend getting some faster clocked ram even though it might not be able to run at those speeds right away due to some early growing pains of the platform.

yeah i would definitely would say go for that then as the extra speed may  not matter now but down the line it could give a good fps boost in games.

No Bluetooth sadly but iirc it's basically an 80 PLUS bronze version of the GQ? @quan289had an answer for it before.

My account is almost entirely dormant. Hope you all are having a grand time. Many years of fun were had here.

Would you recommend it? Saving potentially $40 could be nice, although if it's really not great then I'm fine getting the SeaSonic one too.

I think you are got my comment mixed up when I had said the GD is the non-modular version of the GQ.

I have no information on the BT series (just heard of it), but wtf...why EVGA keep releasing new series whose name look so fucking similar? Seriously, it's like they are trying to be the next Thermaltake with their TR2 series where they have like 7 platform across 4 different OEMs.
