don't get me wrong .. I like that they support Vulkan, but I loathe the engine as a whole - the most shittiest performance I have seen in a modern game engine

I dunno, maybe they got better over the years maybe not; maybe with their new generation, 6, they'll get a perf overhaul

ive never used unity on a desktop, only on mobile and that's for one game on ios.. where it should use metal.. y'know?

It's really not that shitty performance wise. You just have to know what you're doing. Its really easy to have a bunch of unnecessary draw calls because LODs aren't handled as easily as in UE4. A well optimized Unity project isn't much more demanding than a similar UE4 project. 

 

 

Your reason for thinking this is likely because its the most used modern engine by indie devs. Indie devs often lack the experience and don't optimize quite as well.

filtering

 

when I saw the shit inXile did with WasteLand 2, I cried ...

same inXile, Tides of Numenera - issues continue, console owners cried foul, dunno how well it performs on PC

Don't blame the engine, blame the dev. Unity isn't very forgiving for mistakes as Unreal. 

 

I've used loads of engines, Unity is far from terrible. (not my fav either, but it's definitely a capable little engine if you use it right)

It might be because almost all unity games are like in beta or alpha so they run like shit.Blake Wake and Rust being the the most known ones

I'm a huge Godot fanboy. So I'm really thinking 3.0 can compete with Unity for 3d. Although personally, for 2d, Godot takes the cake.. easily.  3d, as of right now not so much.

 

Unity as of right now, for 3d is just insanely fun / easy to do

Not just battlefield 1, but check out Star Wars Battlefront as well. Fantastic ratio of Visuals:Performance.

Doom 2016 with Vulkan update is another game which springs to mind achieving an outstanding ratio of Visuals:Performance.

Godot 3 will be interesting but for 3D on mobile I'll be sticking with Unity for a while. When Godot finally gets Vulkan support in a few years I might switch back.

Interesting: The one notable (and probably one of the better ones) game on Unity would be Cities: Skylines. A game notoriously known to be a CPU resource hog so assuming Unity does their job well enough on the Vulkan implementation the performance gains could be massive, like literally another AOTS.

 

My only concern is that very few tech reviewers will notice since the slowdowns are very dependent of end-game content: You literally have to play the game for serveral hours and be fairly good to get a city with 90 to 100k citizens and several really populated tiles and only at that point does the game gets tough on performance and we're talking big performance dip: even a 7700k can be slowed way below 30 FPS on a dense city, zoomed in and with the game speed turned up.

tbh, I only find the 2d aspect appealing in Godot. I honestly hate the 3d stuff they're doing with Godot 

 

I know the main developer is working on a new 3d renderer, etc.. but I just have a feeling Unity is so much better, especially in regards to their fbx support and how fucking easy it is to just import an fbx and boom boom, animations and compatibility and everything is working.

 

With that said, Godot interlaced with GDScript is far superior in the 2d department than any engine out there imho.

Oh absolutely. I think the biggest problem for 3D for Godot is time and resources. As a free open source community effort, they're really limited for both money and skilled coders experienced with 3D. That's part of the reason they're pushing work on OpenGL ES 3.x instead of OpenGL 4.4, Vulkan or WebGL2.0

 

It's sad to see but Godot is going to have a lot of trouble keeping up for 3D performance and feature wise over the next few years. Just to name a few big ticket items they don't even have on their roadmap for 2017:

•Webassembly (Unity already has Webassembly support, it's just not shipping default until browsers stabalize)

•WebGL-next which is likely to be based off Vulkan (not yet defined, but I can't imagine Unity dragging their heels with it)

•WebGL 2.0 (already in Unity)

•Vulkan and VR support for mobile (already in Unity)

•OpenGL4.4/4.5 support (in unity)

 

Their focus right now is supporting the bare essentials, but that's making it hard for any big names to pick them up, and the problem with FOSS projects like this is unless someone big comes along and picks them up it's going to be hard to get funding to support anything beyond the basics.

Unity mostly suffers from bad developers who can use the engine but really don't know what they are doing and how something can be done. Something minor as asset pooling makes a great difference in performance on Unity and developer must make it themselves (unlike in Unreal where asset pooling is automated). Biggest sell point at this moment for Unity is VR, because it supports multi-camera scenes where it's biggest competitor (Unreal) doesn't.

 

Bringing Vulkan support to Unity is great, but what I have personally waited more is better PhysX support (from which I have seen few demos but they seem to drop or it's included in particle system update), because that is one big thing Unity has been lacking for quite a while.

 

What comes to the game engine competition at this moment I don't see much anything else than Unity competing against Unreal. If you have a lot of money you can get the CryEngine, but because of the price it has it's own competition with every other in-house engine there is (Snowdrop, REDengine, RAGE, Frostbite, Source and so on). I would like to add to the competition Amazon Lumberyard, but it's in way too early stages to be included and only time will tell what it brings to the board. But these are only the general purpose engines, there's quite a lot less used specialiced engines that do their thing better than Unity and Unreal combined but they are too usage dependable and I include Godot here.
