Kicked Computer

cheiften98

My desktop is on the floor and my external hdd is behind my it. My foot slipped and I dont know if I kicked my external hdd or my desktop or both. There was an extremely loud grindy noise so i panicked and shut my pc off. I was playing overwatch at the time and thats on my internal hdd and that didnt crash or anything and i would of thought if it was my internal it would. Maybe its a fan or it was my hdd but hard drive sentinel already told me that my external was going to die. But it seems fine but I think there is more errors when i did a scan.

Just wondered if anyone would know what it could of possibly been? thanks

sounds like something got stuck in a fan

nothing to worry about

just make sure you keep your cables as far away as possible from the fans and ziptie them down

also if your hard drive broke one small kick to it wouldn't end its life, it was probably almost dead anyways

OFF TOPIC: I suggest every poll from now on to have "**CK EA" option instead of "Other"

Could be either really. If you want to check, open your PC and disconnect the power cables to your hard drive(s).  Unplug the external.  Turn it on.  If you hear it still, it's a fan or a cable hitting a fan.

Plug in external, see if you hear anything.

turn off system, plug in HDD, turn back on.

Just a process of elimination.

how durable are mechanical hard drives, ive never had one break but this is my first. I have an ssd too so i know physical damage wont affect those. Will a slight kick damage a mechanical hdd?

HDDs are pretty durable but any massive shock will affect the platter orientation and possibly lead to a broken head.

This is proof that everything cries when they are ABUSED......you kicked her, you would make a loud noise if you were kicked. You better apologize before all the other components start to rebel against your tyranny.

I still remember my HS computer teaching says in the old days when a computer isn't starting up. People would actually kick it. This is where the word "boot up" comes from.
