Yes, a server is necessary for the world to continue operating the way it does today.

Made me think of that episode of The IT Crowd with that black box that is the internet.. is that Server ? or is it Dancer

If you're asking that generic of a question then you probably don't know enough about servers to either run one or to need one.

Join the Appleitionist cause! See spoiler below for answers to common questions that shouldn't be common!

Spoiler

Q: Do I have a virus?!
A: If you didn't click a sketchy email, haven't left your computer physically open to attack, haven't downloaded anything sketchy/free, know that your software hasn't been exploited in a new hack, then the answer is: probably not.

Q: What email/VPN should I use?
A: Proton mail and VPN are the best for email and VPNs respectively. (They're free in a good way)

Q: How can I stay anonymous on the (deep/dark) webzz???....

A: By learning how to de-anonymize everyone else; if you can do that, then you know what to do for yourself.

Q: What Linux distro is best for x y z?

A: Lubuntu for things with little processing power, Ubuntu for normal PCs, and if you need to do anything else then it's best if you do the research yourself.

Q: Why is my Linux giving me x y z error?

A: Have you not googled it? Are you sure StackOverflow doesn't have an answer? Does the error tell you what's wrong? If the answer is no to all of those, message me.

There can be multiple servers in one case right?

I'm not the most qualified person to answer but if you're talking about two motherboards, then no. (Or at least not to my knowledge) There can be multiple servers in one rack, however.

BOINC Setup:
i5 7200U @ Stock

Core2Duo T6600 @ Stock

i3 2330M @ Stock

If I can have 3 servers to one rack it would file server, computer backup, and game server.

Also, the backup and file server could probably be one. What exactly would the game server do?

you can run that on the same system.

backup and file are normally the exact same thing.

You can use vm's for this.

NOrmally with servers you install a hypervisor on the hardware like hyper-v or kvm or esxi and everything runs in a vm.

For this use id probably run linux on the hardware, and run the file server on the hardware, and run all the other programs and services in a vm or container.

Technically it is possible and it is called blade server. However, those things are noisy, expensive, power hungry, and simply not made to be a home server.

I agree but in the most cases what home users think that they need is an overkill. In 99% of the cases they don't need multiple servers. They don't even need virtual machines. They just need a regular decent spec PC with single OS which can serve multiple roles.

And the question for OP. Why it needs to be in rack form factor? Do you have 19" rack enclosure? If no it will be just waste of money. If you really want some server grade hardware, just buy any Supermicro ATX MBO and make your own server by using any computer case that you like. Otherwise you can just use any reliable brand MBO. Rack units don't have any server magical powers and they are highly impractical in the home environment. Not to mention that they are really noisy.
