1700 vs 7700 for a programmer and gamer

RRGT19

Hi,

I use to create Software and Websites:

  • Adobe Dreamweaver
  • Adobe Fireworks
  • Adobe Photoshop
  • FileZilla
  • Visual Studio
  • Eclipse Neon
  • MySQL Community

I play games at 1080p too, a lot.

Which CPU will be better for me:

  1. 1700 at $329.99
  2. 7700 at $315.99

1700 would be better for your task, 1700 can also game not as well but if you get a x370 mobo and get the cpu up to 4.1 ghz you should be good.

Do the programs you use take advantage of more cores?

Gaming is better on the 7700k than on the 1700.

idk

I don't like the OC and I don't want to spend more money buying an AIO.

1700 stock will also be fine, 8 core cpu will be better for creative work. what is your budget ?

Will you be running those applications and games at the same time? Or just one at a time.

7700 will give higher gaming avg fps if you're just running one at a time.

1700 will handle stuff better if you have a bunch of stuff running at the back ground.

Like say, visual studio + Android Studio with an emulator + 100 Chrome tabs + "insert your avg mmo game here", the 1700 will fair better in that.

Though I will add that the X370 platform is still really immature. So there will bound to be some incompatibility issues. High speed ram compatibility isn't very good right now. Its similar to the state that X99 was with ddr4 3 years ago.

i5 2400 | ASUS RTX 4090 TUF OC | Seasonic 1200W Prime Gold | WD Green 120gb | WD Blue 1tb | some ram | a random case

The 7700 will compile your stuff significantly faster.

HEDT gets replaced every two years, that's normal. x79 was replaced after Xeon v1/v2, x99 replaced after v3/v4..

idk

I'd get the 1700 tbh. 7700k only beats the 1700 in gaming because of significantly higher clocks. The 7700 is only at 3.6ghz, and it's locked.

Gaming performance should  be similar ( especially if you aren't running an extremely high end gpu like the 1080 or 1080ti), and you'll have vastly better productivity performance.

AMD Ryzen R7 1700 (3.8ghz) w/ NH-D14, EVGA RTX 2080 XC (stock), 4*4GB DDR4 3000MT/s RAM, Gigabyte AB350-Gaming-3 MB, CX750M PSU, 1.5TB SDD + 7TB HDD, Phanteks enthoo pro case

If you arent overclocking id probably take the 1700 - 7700k excels with gaming performance when running high boost/overclocks

1700 then. I would still apply a mild OC (no need for an AIO since that chip only has a TDP of 65w), but no need for anything crazy.

1700 get it up to 4ghz, should be fine because of the 65w

are u playing at 4k or 1440p ?

If 1080p every cpu will bottleneck the 1080ti without vsync

I'd also recommend the 7700K. Programming honestly doesn't use that much CPU power. I can code on my mid range laptop pretty easily...The 7700K would game a bit better too.

The faster single core speed would help you more with coding. I have a lot of stuff open on my 2700K and I can't see much of a issue with coding.

Even for gaming you'll still get like 100+ frames with the 1700 + 1080Ti.

No reason to worry.

To give you an idea, my 4790k is clocked at 4.5GHz and is more than twice as slow when exporting in adobe premiere compared to my stock 1700x.  Gaming wise, it falls behind 5-10%.

Hi guys,

I was watching the prices on Newegg and for $420 you get the 1700 and the MSI B350. Is a nice deal.

I have a monitor 24" 1080p 60hz.

GTX1080Ti

Samsung 960 EVO

For Intel is $464 and you get 7700 and ASUS H270F.

I have read that Windows 10 is gonna bring an update to handle better the AMD's processor.

The thing is, again, I create software and I need the best performance possible when I have 2-4 programs opened. Also, I like to play games at 60FPS constant at max settings too.

Again, which combo do you think will be better for me?, I'm confused.

Even if programming is single core, the price difference is $44.

  1. 1700 - MSI B350 / $420
  2. 7700 - ASUS H270F / $464

nothing, just a samsung 960 evo.

I don't know if the programs I use will benefit from more cores or not, I don't want to have delays because of the CPU.

Well a 1080ti and either of the 7700k or 1700 will be MORE than enough for 1080P 60hz - if you're set on 1080P get the 1700 it wont make a difference and cores will help in software
