So LTT forum,

I've had the pleasure of building myself a computer in the summer.

Specs:

I7 6700

MSI Gaming 1070 M3

NZXT Kraken x31 120mm

16GBS of RAM

250 GB SSD from Samsung, their EVO 850

and an old 1TB HDD from WD.

The issue is, it worked fine for ages, but now, something's happened to the CPU.

I have no idea what.

My FPS in games from GTA V to Dota 2 dropped from the 100 FPS limit I have on them to below 40. Regularly even low 20s.

Considering the effort and money I put into this computer, this is unacceptable to me.

I've used benchmarks like Geekbench, on which I scored

Single Core:                                           Multi Core:

1221                                                       3811

So, after looking at what they're supposed to be I realised there's a problem.

I went about downloading CAM and took a look at the CPU Load and temp while gaming for about a week, and although the load goes up to 80%, the Temp doesn't go higher than about 20 degrees C.

This is just baffling for me, although I like to consider myself a tech guy, I'm stuck.

I've done everything from installing new drivers to a fresh install of windows.

Intel even sent me a brand new CPU as we both assumed it was some kind of hardware fault (Warrenties and whatnots)

I hope someone out there, who is smarter than I am, can fix this soon.

Thanks guys.

Actually, I'll humour you all, lets say this was a high background program issue, how could I fix that?

Even if the cause was a sensor, that wouldn't explain the drop in FPS. And Intel even gave you a new CPU and you have the exact same problem? The odds of two CPUs being faulty in a row is astronomically high. I'd be willing to bet it's something with the motherboard - coupled with bad reporting on temps AND FPS drops in games after working just fine "for ages", I'd say the problem lies in there.

You can also try taking out a stick of RAM (assuming you have more than one), reseating the Kraken cooler and reseating the CPU. If all of those fails and your FPS is still shitty and your temps are not being reported correctly, I'd guess your mobo is the issue.

Have you checked to see whether the sensor on the CPU cooler is broken?

No, how can I do that?

Surely if it was anyway, it would be registering a higher temp becuase the inside of the Case would be hotter than 19 degrees.

When it comes to AIO's like the Kraken, the temperature sensor is in the liquid. As such, the cooler could be damaged somehow and is not cooling your CPU properly, resulting in throttling.

I've already reseated the RAM and cooler. I assumed, because the problem persisted though the second CPU that it was an issue with the software of my comp.

Ah well in that case, what @NLR mentioned might be a better answer then what I provided. Perhaps the AIO is going bad. How old is it?

What frequencey is it running at. You probably set some  the power setting wrong of the multipler to low.

I've not messed with the settings on any of this. Right now, running about 5 different basic applications like discord, steam and Chrome, its running at 798MHz

I thought about throttling, but wouldn't that result in lower CPU load, not just lower temps? (Im not sure, this is just my assumption)

I'd have thought that the speed would decrease but the Load woudln't, is that wrong?

th frequency is your problem. CHeck your power settings and try forcing the multipler to max in the bios.

When a CPU thermal throttles, it reduces its frequency to try and reduce temperatures. Whatever load its under remains.  I think your CPU cooler is broken.

Yep, Intel i7 6700.

I don't know why, can I change it somehow?

I'm no professional here, but it should be in the bios somewhere. Look up a YT video on how to get into your motherboards BIOS, and look for frequency settings

Right, thanks for all the advice guys.

It seems that we've come to the conclusion that the frequency is the issue.

I'm going to go into my BIOS and do some tinkering with that, will update you once all is said and done.

Thanks from London!

I think your issue is your CPU cooler. Unless you manually set your frequency that low, it shouldn't have reduced itself to that low of a frequency. I still suggest you see whether your CPU cooler is breaking/broken.

If you need any further assistance, reply here and I'll see what I can do to help you out.

I think you're wrong actually.

After a near fruitless trip into the BIOS I've found that the fans are working as expected, CPU cooler included. However, it seems that everywhere that the CPU frequency is mentioned, it is 0.8GHz.

I think it was @Electronics Wizardy who said it first, although I may be wrong, but the Frequency does seem to be abnormally low. I couldn't change it myself and a few googles came up with nothing useful.

If anyone has a video about how I can change the freq of a non-K skew chip, I'd appreciate that.
