"For the "electronic backpack" to work the cockroaches have to be placed in icy water to subdue them before sandpaper is used to remove the waxy coating on the shell of the insect's head.

An electrode connector and electrodes are then glued on to the insect's body and a needle is used to poke a hole in their thorax in order to insert a wire.

Their antennae are then cut and electrodes are inserted. A circuit is attached to their backs, and signals are received through a mobile phone app allowing users to control the cockroaches' movements to the left and to the right."

anyone think this is inhumane? because i certainly do and i very much agree with this quote that it would "encourage thinking of complex living organisms as mere machines or tools"

oh dear was that YOUR computer i just downloaded a few dozen viruses on when you weren't paying attention?

This has already been invented and it doesn't involve ice water, sandpaper and a bug.

It's not inhumane... It's a bug, they have no emotion, they function purely on instinct. Next thing you'll be telling me is that it's "inhumane" for me to kill flies.

Next lab rats... maybe some day humans?
Imagine you live on the future and when you go to work you have to wear a electromagnetic stimulation helmet that is controlled wireless by a computer running the software the company developed.

You get to be free after 8 hours of solid high performance work.

The cockroaches are not sentient. They are incapable of thought past "I am hungry" and "I am horny". Although I wouldn't go around stomping insects or randomly killing them I do not think it is really bad if we learn something out of experiments where they die.
