Toshiba's rocky future: possibility of bankruptcy filing after chairman resigns following a $6.3 billion loss

Tim Q
Quote

TOKYO — The chaos at Toshiba, the Japanese corporate giant, deepened Tuesday, with its chairman resigning and the company saying it would book a $6.3 billion loss related to its U.S. nuclear business.

Analysts are now speculating about the possibility that Toshiba, which employs almost 200,000 people in Japan and has significant investments in the United States, will have to file for bankruptcy.

“This is one of Japan’s historic corporations and it’s very important to the Japanese economy, so this could be very significant for Japan,” said Tom O’Sullivan, a Tokyo-based energy analyst. “It would even impact Japan’s sovereign credit rating if there’s a knock-on effect.”

It would be sad to see Toshiba go - I do have a soft spot for them being the makers of first laptop I had.

If they do go under, other brands under the Toshiba corporate umbrella like OCZ might go down with them too.

I feel the same. My first laptop was also a toshiba. I am no longer a fan of their devices now though. For me they don't last long.

I have a Toshiba Pentium 4 laptop that I've used pretty much my whole life. It would be really sad to see them go. I like Toshiba. I have one of their Core 2 Duo laptops and it served great as a daily driver until a relative gave me an "old" Core i3 based HP.

Main System: Phobos

AMD Ryzen 7 2700 (8C/16T), ASRock B450 Steel Legend, 16GB G.SKILL Aegis DDR4 3000MHz, AMD Radeon RX 570 4GB (XFX), 960GB Crucial M500, 2TB Seagate BarraCuda, Windows 10 Pro for Workstations/macOS Catalina

Secondary System: York

Intel Core i7-2600 (4C/8T), ASUS P8Z68-V/GEN3, 16GB GEIL Enhance Corsa DDR3 1600MHz, Zotac GeForce GTX 550 Ti 1GB, 240GB ADATA Ultimate SU650, Windows 10 Pro for Workstations

Older File Server: Yet to be named

I don't think I ever bought a Toshiba product, funnily enough. First computer I bought (non-used) with my own money was Fujitsu though. Before I discovered the glory of self-building. Hope Toshiba make it.

In case the moderators do not ban me as requested, this is a notice that I have left and am not coming back.

If Toshiba goes under in this way, it could be the end of significant investment in nuclear power. This news is really bad for the climate.

Yeah, many people have no idea how huge some of these Japanese companies are and they're not just confined to consumer electronics and appliances.

Many of them actually have roots in heavy industry.

Aww. That sucks. Toshiba is one of those companies that haven't really done anything wrong (product wise, that is).

Their HDDs are pretty good, laptops are probably the best looking consumer laptops that aren't premium (Razer Blade, HP Spectre, etc.) and they seem to be the only ones making TVs (besides Sony) that aren't bloated to shit with useless features. (Give me non-Smart TV, 100HZ 50" OLED pls)

Hoping someone will buy out their awesome divisions.

Very unlikely you'll get a consumer 100Hz TV. 100Hz is just a bad resolution refresh rate to work with, as it doesn't multiply as a whole number with many of the industry standards (notably, 24p Blu-Ray/Cinema content) - perhaps in some limited European release that can work with 25Hz and 50Hz PAL content?

A VRR version could of course work totally fine, but why stop at 100Hz and not just bump up to 120Hz?

I haven't had many Toshiba products but I have a 250GB HDD from them that has been going strong since 09 and I like OCZ.

I just bought 4x 3TB Toshiba HDD's recently. So I'm hoping they'll last at least as long as the warranty is valid for :P

Typo - if you had read the rest of my post, you would have inferred that, since "resolution" would make no sense in the context of my post.

True 100Hz TVs have been out for years. It's nearly the standard now.

Can you post a link about this?

In North America, "true" 60Hz is still common (eg: lots of 120Hz panels are 60Hz panels using tricks like strobing, etc) - though there may actually be true 120Hz panels out too.

This sucks. First gaming TV was a Toshiba cube + original xbox, and I loved that thing, it kicked ass for it's time. Lasted a long time too. Oh well.

Even then, Europe's been shifting towards 24p/30p/60i/p content in recent years, so it just gets even nastier.
