Would it be better to buy after market modem and use my router Asus RT-AC68P or use Optimum gateway and buy new router?

I think I'm double nat Optimum doesn't think so. This is on cable 300mbps

A gateway is a modem router combo, so unless the gateway is in bridge mode then you are in fact Double NAT. Personally I have a CM1000v2 on our Comcast service. It works great, Comcast charges $15 a month for their gateway so its a no brainer for us.

My advice is to see if Optimum has a supported modem list. Regardless of service level Id get a Docsis 3.1 modem. At this point they come in two flavors ones that have Gigabit Ethernet and max out about 940 Mbps and ones that have 2.5 Gbps Ethernet and get do multi Gig speeds. Thats going to depend on what speeds you feel you might get in the future. My CM1000v2 only has Gigabit port, but we wont do the high speed plans because Comcast wants to rape us on price.

I just want to sit back and watch the world burn.

Optimum support says they put it in bridge mode...I have no way of checking....I was looking at the Arris S33

Only reason I think I'm in double nat is I saw this in my router

The wireless router currently uses a private WAN IP address.

This router may be in the multiple-NAT environment. While using an External check might allow DDNS to reflect the correct IP address, this might still interfere with remote access services.

I don't remember how to check for double nat

If the WAN IP falls in a private range then you are double NAT.

The S33 should be fine, I know on Comcast it will support the highest download speeds. Not sure about Mid Split support (higher uploads).

The S33 will not support the higher upload speeds, sadly. The S33 is also very easy to overheat. Not a big deal, and a restart fixes it, but I've never owned a more "temperature-mental" modem.
