Playing Dota 2 (want higher FPS)

Bliznipa

My system is a intel xeon e3 1231 v3, r9 380x (not overclocked or anything), 16 gb ram, ssd for storage. I've noticed I am always stuck on 60 fps no matter what and I'm not sure why. I'd like to be closer to 100 and I don't think my hardware should be an issue as far as I know. Maybe it's a settings issue? Hopefully someone with Dota2 knowledge can help me as I'm relatively new to Dota2 even though I played Dota1 like crazy.

I've also noticed my graphics card rarely gets over 40 deg Cel, which isn't a bad thing but even at 60 fps (and I can never seem to go higher), the temp never goes up. I'd happily increase higher temps to get higher framerates as those temps are still really low even at full load. I feel like I'm missing something.

Also I should mention I'm only playing at 1080p.

Any help is appreciated.

Thanks

This sounds like a screen refresh rate issue.  You're probably running a 60Hz monitor, to get 100 FPS you need a 100Hz monitor, to get 144 FPS 144Hz etc.

Heres a decent 144Hz monitor for $250

The game probably has sensed that you most likely have a 60hz monitor. In an effort to reduce power use, your system has reduced the performance to meet that 60hz threshold. You would have to get a better monitor to achieve higher frame rates.

I assume V sync is off? and I think it caps at 120.

Why do you always die right after I fix you?

I'm using a 24" acer 1080p monitor 60 hz 5 ms response time. I also have a 27" benQ that I use for console gaming that's 1 ms response time but also 60 hz. Do I really need a higher Hz monitor to have higher fps? I understand there could be tearing but I'd even like to have closer to 80 fps if possible. Another similar question though is I would think with an r9 380x I could play at highest settings but I been dropping down to 30 fps if I do. Is the video card not sufficient for that? If I could keep a consistent 60 fps that would be fine too, but I'd like to have it all on high settings if possible

V sync is off. But I still never go over 60 fps, and at highest settings I only get about 30 fps

You can't see more frames than the screen can refresh. Anything over 60fps on a 60hz monitor is useless.

Ok that's fine, but I would like to have it all on high settings, and when I max out everything I sit around 30 fps, which is very noticeable. Is there any issue with the fact that I use a DVI-D cord rather than an HDMI?

I don't know about the card but this site gives +31% score to the 480 over yours.

A 1060/1070/480 will give you the performance you need easily.

I'd suggest a 75Hz (overclockable an extra 25Hz) ultrawide LG 25UM58-P 25.0

https://ca.pcpartpicker.com/product/wNcMnQ/lg-monitor-25um58p

480 is + 31% speed

1060 is + 38% speed

I use DVI-D but I'd suggest that if you buy the ultrawide + new GPU (even keeping your old on) use HDMI

That sounds like a hardware issue not a monitor issue. If you're only able to get 30fps max, your system isn't powerful enough to output the 60fps.

That's what's interesting. I would think a r9 380x at 1080p should be able to play dota2 at 60 fps high settings. Dota isn't a very graphically demanding game as far as I know

So I just made the most amateur mistake. I realized I had my graphics card outputting to both my monitors at the same time. I thought I unplugged one but clearly did not. As soon as I disconnected the other one, my fps skyrocketed to over 120 fps. Sorry everyone but thanks for the help.

But a follow-up question is am I able to leave my 2nd monitor plugged in, but somehow not have the video card display to it? Like if I want to display it there in the future I can by changing a setting or something?

Thanks again for the help

Glad to hear you fix your problem, I'm no AMD guy but I thought it was strange how low those frames were especially on DotA!

Yea I was so confused. Based on all the research I've done I shouldn't have any problems maxing out settings and getting 60 fps which I don't now. Possibly biggest fail since building my PC

Yeah, glad to see that issue solved.  I should mention that you still aren't actually able to see over 60fps due to the "low" refresh rate.  Until you get a higher refresh rate you won't benefit from that performance

Partially true, you won't see all 120 FPS but you can feel lower input latency at much higher frame rate.
