Can Windows 10 Auto Update be disable

I have what is now a massive annoyance of Windows 10 machines auto updating, restarting and then I don't know they restarted, they stopped what they where doing and then just sit at the login screen, I've had the last straw now when I found one that'd be waiting like that for almost 12, sitting idly. Is there any registry edit or way to completely remove the update function from windows? I don't care about updates, it barely has any internet connection (only through a VPN to another machine) and I expect it to no restart and sit with it's fucking thumb up it's ass.

Yours faithfully

Anyway to completely remove that part of windows? Like just remove it entirely by deleting it? If I didn't activate this copy of Windows 10 I won't be sticking a pro license on it (I'd rather go back to linux have the minor issue I was before)

well you can disable the update service and it should never do update stuff again(but you never really know in windows 10). You can also block the microsoft servers on your firewall/router.

in windows 10 pro you can by searching services and then going down to windows update, double click then change manual to disable and click apply and press stop that disables them in windows 10 pro but dont no if it works on home or windows 10 pro after 1511.

Hmm, the firewall might work but I need to make sure it wouldn't interfere in the pseudo web server it operates on for my home network, and most importantly BOINC. This VM is only on windows because the firepro (which I have a more Linux friendly nvidia replacement in another machine) didn't like linux and the backing up up was an arse because idk, maybe my windows PC didn't like the file system.

You can block the servers via your router if you know how.

Not after the creators update.

After 30-60 days without a license Windows begins to get unhappy and may lock up on you because it can no longer verify its legitimacy.

Well, 14 months later it still works fine, (albeit subtly hints that it would like it's code) but's it's a VM, I'll just reinstall it if it starts acting up.

ahhh ok well im still running 1511 build 10240 but it seemed like something microsoft would change so people couldnt stop there updates

You can defer the update though, just not stop all together. The reason for this was that people was stopping updates which were stopping the security updates as well. If they could just make an option to stop feature updates and continue security updates all would fine for most people.

I personally get all updates but then again I am a pre-viewer soooo......

why not windows 7 or 8 or 2008 or 2012r2 then?

Because they need a code before they'll even install, and while I have a few Windows server evaluations copies, I don't want to pay €600 for that when it needs it!

You can use the generic keys to install it. Google it Microsoft has a list for installing the os. Server 2012r2 will run fine inactivated.

Just setup your Windows properly.

You can define Active Hours so Windows Update doesn't kick-in, and you can can define the Maintenance schedule.

Active Hours are defined where Windows Update is (Settings > Update & security > Windows Update), Maintenance schedule, is under: Start > type: Maintenance , pick: Security and Maintenance to jump directly there, expand "Maintenance", and in there you can set the time you want Windows to start the maintenance schedule.

If you have a HDD, you can define the schedule for Windows Defragging your disk. The option is under Optimize Drive panel (Start > type: Defrag > pick: Defrayment & Optimize Drive),

Nope.. you can only disable it in Enterprise Version.

But you can disable restart by DOwnload WinAero Tweaker

That's missing the point and not a solution. I have same problem as OP, in that I run compute tasks on my machines 24/7. WU deciding to reboot on its own initiative results in lost time. The Win7 way of doing things was great. I tell it when it can reboot. All was right with the world. I'm currently using the disable WU service method also, but if another post is right and they're going to remove that in future, I guess I'll have to then resort to one of the network blocking methods instead.

I Ann really surprised that no one said you could label your internet connection as "metered". It works on Home, and I don't know why it wouldn't on Pro.

I saw that as an option, although I'm waiting to see does it work, I doubt it will with the hundreds of Gibabytes moved between it and other PC's in a given week.

Wait, that's a lie, I did that on my tabletbook to stop updates, both of my windows machines (1 VM and 1 actual PC apart from Gobbles) are connected via ethernet which I can't seem to set as metered, as well as one has two connections, one's a "VPN" to another PC for internet access and the other is purely local area, not allowed to leave the router.

Well, something must be wrong on your side of the equation. I did that on my laptop, and it hasn't downloaded an update since I've owned it.
