i5 4690k + z87

I just bought i5 4690k along with MSI z87M mobo at around $ 360.00. I decided to go with Haswell because going to Skylake will get me around $ 560.00.

Was this a great deal in the next 4-6 years? By the way, I got GTX 970, 120GB San disk SSD, 8 GB DDR3 1600Mhz, FSP Aurum Gold 80 Plus 700 watt PSU..

psu seems shady but the rest of build seems decent - it doesn't really matter if the cpu is 4th gen, it'll still perform like a 6600k stock if u oc it - 16gb of ram would be optimal tho

I wonder because it has the word gold in it. Aurum starts at TIER 4 so not that bad

That combo will be sufficient over the next 3 years or so. Unless you're willing to compromise quite a bit on quality settings in games.

i5's are already meeting their match with today's crop of games, such as BF1.

That model is actually fairly decent. It is the only FSP PSU worth any consideration.

New Build (The Compromise): CPU - i7 9700K @ 5.1Ghz Mobo - ASRock Z390 Taichi | RAM - 16GB G.SKILL TridentZ RGB 3200CL14 @ 3466 14-14-14-30 1T | GPU - ASUS Strix GTX 1080 TI | Cooler - Corsair h100i Pro | SSDs - 500 GB 960 EVO + 500 GB 850 EVO + 1TB MX300 | Case - Coolermaster H500 | PSUEVGA 850 P2 | Monitor - LG 32GK850G-B 144hz 1440p | OSWindows 10 Pro.

Peripherals - Corsair K70 Lux RGB | Corsair Scimitar RGB | Audio-technica ATH M50X + Antlion Modmic 5 |

CPU/GPU history: Athlon 6000+/HD4850 > i7 2600k/GTX 580, R9 390, R9 Fury > i7 7700K/R9 Fury, 1080TI > Ryzen 1700/1080TI > i7 9700K/1080TI.

Other tech: Surface Pro 4 (i5/128GB), Lenovo Ideapad Y510P w/ Kali, OnePlus 6T (8G/128G), PS4 Slim.

yeah planning to overclock it, though still trying to learn this for a week before trying to attempt it. What are the basics that I need to know in overclocking?

just don't go over 1.45 volts - that's a safe zone for first time overclockers - 1.37 volts and maybe 4ghz or 4.2ghz seems safe

Nice to hear you got an upgrade! That CPU will be good for a while! The only thing I'd go for is 16gb of RAM as already mentioned. And if you plan to overclock get a nice big air cooler heatsink.

I wouldn't go over 1.3v if you don't have the cooling capacity of a high end cooler on haswell.

No i was questioning his/her statement on the recommended voltage for haswell oc.

Cause last I'd check. No one recommended going over 1.4v if you don't have beefy cooling. 1.3v+ already requires quite substantial cooling.

But he/she is right about 1.45v, you don't want to do that lol.

Since it's Haswell, I honestly wouldn't go over the stock voltage unless he has a good CPU cooler.  The first thing I did when I bought my 4790K was undervolt it to 1.17v because of the insane temperatures.  When I got a Hyper 212 Evo, I was able to push it a little closer to the stock voltage so I could OC.
