For the first time ever, I feel that my 2500k is holding me back :(

I'm not sure why I'm making this topic. Maybe to talk about it with other old, but gold CPU owners.

I have my 2500k for 4 years now. I bought it used and OC it to 4.1GHz (212 EVO) paired with GTX 770. I was happy with that setup for ~3 years.

After that I got a 970 and h55 (yea I know... it was supposed to be a cooler for gpu). I was able to OC my CPU to 4.5 GHz on that cooler. Great! Again, I was very happy with my setup.

Well... I got a 1080 now. It's a bit of a different story. I feel that my CPU is holding my GPU back... BIG time. To the point where I don't really feel that i have a new GPU. Yes, witcher is showing ~110 fps instead of ~55, but... it's still not smooth. Overwatch... same story, I don't think I got that much more fps...

My fire strike score is awesome on GPU (23 300). I love it.

But I'm kinda sad... THE BEST CPU I ever had is finally old in my eyes.

Now, I'm just waiting. I want to see what will happen with Ryzen release.

If it will be a fail, I might even sell my 1080 and stick with 970 because it feels like a waste in my rig.

Anyone can relate?

Cheers.

You could sell the 2500K, and get a 2600K for ~$160, overclock it to 4.6 Ghz, and be in i7 6700K / 7700K territory.

I'm trying to hunt down a 3770k. I was super close to buying one for 70 USD on craigslist, but someone was faster ;)

But idk... It might be better to wait and see what Ryzen will bring into the market. It can't get any worse that's for sure xD

I did the same, look for a 3770K, though ultimately decided that I didn't want to spend nearly $100 more (6 or so months ago) for it, over a 2600K.

$70 would be an amazing price.

I know, right? I was so pissed that I was not able to get it... I also missed a 2500k for 20 USD. Not even kidding...

Then yes your i5 will bottleneck your 144hz display, and yes a 1070 would have been enough for the display, the 1080 is more for trying to hit 1440p 144hz

but not even an i7 7700K can run some games at 144fps

Actually, since he has a Gtx 1080, the difference will be even bigger than in that video, so a 2600k at 4.6 won't be in 6700k/7700k territory.

Sell it at a profit and upgrade your CPU when Ryzen drops

A GTX 1080 doesn't reach 144hz at 1080p, let alone 1440p. If having a high hz display monitor, I would want more than a GTX 1070, for 1080p. Otherwise, the high hz capabilities of the monitor would largely be going to waste.

Maybe just drop down to high settings and you'll be fine, in that video the 1080 is hitting 120fps in GTAV

You might be right, but I think that nothing will change on GPU market in one month from now and a lot can change in CPU market. Idk, I feel that it's a smart move to wait...

I created this topic because I was sad with my discovery. 2500k was truly the best CPU I had and I kinda sad that it's hitting it's limits.

Even if I will get a Ryzen or w/e. 2500k will go into my GF build. I'm not selling it! ;)

A lot of GTA V benchmarks exclude all the options in the Advanced settings tab. I think it's the same for those GN scores. It's always an option, though I personally prefer to max as much as possible, while still getting great FPS.

I don't think that was due to the Kaby CPU:

11 hours ago, Delicieuxz said:

The BSOD Jayz got there has happened to lots of people who aren't running Kaby CPUs, and the cause of it doesn't appear to be CPU-related. It's too bad that Jayz didn't look up the BSOD, find out what it's associated with, and talk about it in his video. Instead, he, unintentionally, is giving a false impression that that instability is related to running a Kaby CPU with an older Windows version, when, in all likeliness, it had nothing to do with the CPU being Kaby Lake.

DPC_Watchdog_Violation has occurred on Windows 7, 8, and 10, with all types of CPUs:

I kind of felt the same about my 2500K, but at 4.6Ghz. I ended up going the cheap route and getting a used 2700K off of ebay, and will hold off until Crystal Well before I cough up money for new mobo / RAM again.

I don't have a 1080, but I have a 1070 and a 980 Ti, both match well for me. I'm having more issues when I have more than one program open at a time...2500K is starting to choke (I tend to change between tasks a lot and have a lot of things open).
