Nvidia continues to support a 2 year old Android product? Woah! - Nvidia releases Android 7.0 for Shield TV 2015

AlTech

In case you didn't notice, which I wouldn't blame you if you didn't, Nvidia has released Android 7.0 Nougat to the 2015 Shield TV owners.

This is interesting stuff. This change was only made possible by Nvidia developing the Tegra X1 as a 64 Bit only SOC. If any of you remember the Tegra K1, that was available as a quad core 32 bit CPU or a dual core 64 Bit CPU. Devices with the 32 Bit Tegra K1 such as the Shield Tablet K1 will never get Android 7.0 which is a shame.

Anyways, I'm getting a bit off topic here.

Quote

Under the hood, the big change here of course is the upgrade to Android 7.0 “Nougat.” The latest version of Android doesn’t do quite as much for Android TV devices as we’ve seen on tablets and phones, but of note it adds support for a recent apps page, writing to USB/SD storage, and a new picture-in-picture mode. The latest update also adds support for NVIDIA’s 2017 hardware accessories: the revised SHIELD Remote (Pepper) and SHIELD Game Controller (Thunderstrike).

It also has an Amazon Video App which is fine I guess.

Quote

Meanwhile the biggest user-facing change is the addition of an Amazon Video app. While NVIDIA has been focused on growing out the video/app selection of their STB since it launched in 2015, Amazon has until now been a very notable absence.

I'm not quite sure how Nvidia is handling HDR support through backwards compatibility cos I'm pretty sure Maxwell didn't have the required tech for HDR.

And of course Nvidia is choosing to keep the existing GeforceNow for Shield Android TV as is and will remain $8/month and is completely independent of the GeforceNow for Computers.

Also, I forgot to give props/kudos to Nvidia for supporting 2 year old Hardware. This really needs to become a thing more in the Android consumer space.

My Shield TV got this update on Thursday and its pretty baller, I took the opportunity to format my Shield and start again as it was getting clogged and now its like a different device. Love the new settings menu layout, so much easier to use plus double tapping back finally brings up the suspended apps list and you can double tap the volume slider on your remote to play/pause too.

Also I don't know where you heard the Shield Tablet would never get Android N but I read the exact opposite last week, Nvidia have hinted at the Shield Tablet K1 getting N in a few months.

sucks for the tablet. I had a choice between tablet and the tv and I chose tablet coz it played the same games but was more portable. I should've bought the 500GB model of the TV

Nope, he clearly said the 2015 model was getting updated to the same Android version as the 2017 model. He even talked about how he was excited because his Shield TV was getting the update.

Counting on the manufacturer for official updates is a big mistake. The software dev community does it faster and without you having to fork out a single dime.

this is exactly why i choose my phone based on the XDA community. also why i love oneplus because they actively support rooting etc.

I wish EVGA still supported their gaming tablet, instead they pushed out an update to make the $250 tablet useless and stopped supporting it.

I was referring to the problem with Android 7.0 where almost all 32 Bit CPUs got ditched in terms of support.

This was because ARM designed CPU cores which implement Aarch32 do not support full disk encryption on them. ARM's 64 Bit CPU cores which utilize Aarch64 support full disk encryption with a negligible performance impact.

the only 32 bit SOC I know of which supports full disk encryption is the Snapdragon 805 found in the Nexus 6.

i know but since android is open source, Nvidia can easily (figuratively) recode nougat to not include the obligatory disk encryption, with more ease than all the OEM who use qualcomm's chip since qualcomm doesn't give anyone the source code of their drivers
