Let's say for example you have a 500gb SSD set as the boot drive and you have 2 other 1tb SSDs already in RAID 0 (2tb total) for mass storage. If you get say a 3tb HDD is it possible to set up RAID 1 with both the 500gb SSD and the RAID0 pair for back up?

There are technically some ways to do it, but it's definitely not a good idea. Also, RAID 1 is not a backup, it is redundancy (which would be rendered pointless by having a RAID 0 array within the RAID 1 array.) Doing that would just be asking for something to go wrong.

Hi,

I don't think that's possible. Afraid you'd need to use some other way to back up your data.

Ohh I thought in RAID 1 it takes two drives and write the same data on both of them so effectively if 1 gets corrupted the data is still on the other?

Dumb question but how do people usually back up their data onto a dedicated back up drive?

It takes any number of drives over two and mirrors all data across all drives in the array. So, if you had a write error on one drive, all drives have that write error. That's one of the reasons RAID 1 is not a backup, just redundancy.

if one gets corrupted, the second drive also gets corrupted
RAID 1 is good for recovering data in case one of the 2 drives FAILS

Well you can use some software designed to do that, like for example Paragon disk manager, though I don't know how it handles daily backups (definitely recommended with RAID0) or you can do what I like to call "file level backup" - just copy the files you need to be safe onto the backup disk

This file level back up is a manual process, yes? Was really hoping for something automated lol.

A program copy pastes all or some of your stuff onto another drive every set amount of time.

DO NOT use raid as a replacement for this.

Yes very manual process. I'm sure there's some way to automate it, but I have no idea on what software/price/setup it involves.

EDIT: The Paragon disk manager does have a scheldule option.

Most operating systems have some inbuilt tools for create data backups. If not, or you want some more features, there's hundreds of third party backup software. A lot of it is just setting up an automated schedule and selecting what data to backup, then you just leave it and don't think about it. In the event you get some corrupted data, restore from the backup that doesn't have the corruption.

As you're selecting individual files, it's typically done manually. You can often select folders to backup automatically. If you organise your data well in folders, it shouldn't take long to set up.

I know your question has been answered but they weren't answered the way i would answer them :P. RAID 1 is for uninterrupted service which you do not need on a desktop, it's more for running a database or web site that needs to have 99.99% uptime. If you put a SSD with a mechanical drive in RAID1 you get a huge loss in performance, i tested this last year and made a post somewhere about it. it is possible to do what you asked on linux by stacking filesystems but that would be a shitty solution.
