Are full ATX towers needed anymore?

With ryzen on the horizon i have found myself saving yet again for a new computer, having 520~to 620~ Saved so far just to adopt the AM4 platform. 

So one thing i really dont want to re-use is my Thermaltake n21 versa, an mid tower case for about 50 bucks, it's hard to cable manage and gets fingerprints on it extremely easily so i have decided i will get a new case. 

 

But as i am looking at cases I noticed something, that there are a huge amount of mid tower ATX cases and not a lot of full ATX tower cases. So I started to take notes of cases i like, like the nzxt phantom 410, thermaltake a71 chaser, phanteks enthoo and the rosewell B-2. Other then Full atx towers having more drive bays (i am a bit of a slut for storage) and space for larger gpus, is getting a Full atx tower worth it?

If that's your budget then there's no way you'll need a full tower.  Full towers are when you want to fit massive rad space, lots of HDD's, dual PSUs (rare), etc.

 

The only reason my Worstation sits in a Blackhawk Ultra (massive case) is for flexibility.  I can  fit quad-sli and more on teh expansion with dual power supplies or whatever I want to do.

full towers are more so for the folks going extreme, the extra space comes in handy when you're going custom watercooling out the butt, with two seperated loops, etc.

 

but under regular scenarios.. full towers are more of a problem than they bring solutions.

the biggest problem with full towers, aside from moving them, is that they make all hardware look tiny, as demonstrated by a corsair 900D:

You'll only never need a full tower if a mid tower is not enough to fit everything that you need. However, rarely any average-consumer builds will not fit in a mid tower these days, which is why full tower sales keep decreasing.

Agree. Most of the time mid tower should be enough. If full tower sales are decreasing, why is their prices not following. :( I want a full tower case.

I've bought 2 full sized towers and both are way to big, they're too big to move around and look empty. I'd never recommend one if a mid size case is an option.

I have the phanteks Enthoo Primo SE which is a giant case. About the size of the 900D. I like it for a couple of reasons. I currently have 2 computers in it, 2 PSUs, a couple raspberry pis, a metric butt ton of fans, rads, and I still have room for cable management. It also weighs almost 100lbs and is the most awkward thing to carry as there are no handles. So any thief that wants to snatch it in college is going to think twice.

It legitimately bothers me when I see a colossal tower with a single gpu, aio and 1 or 2 hard drives/SSDs. The sheer amount of wasted space in many builds boggles my mind. 

 

Unless you're gonna do a multi gpu set up with a custom loop or something else adventurous, anything above an itx is kinda a waste.

I guess it really depends on your priorities. For me, of ease of maintenance and practicality are some of the biggest factors I take into consideration. I'm lazy and have big bumbling hands.

e.g. if I forget the CPU power until after the heatsink is already in... I'll be glad if I can connect it easily without partial disassembly thanks to extra roomy case :D

I totally love some of the gorgeous small form factor builds people are doing, I just wouldn't want to be the one to work on it :P

My hands are big too lol and it's kinda a pain to work in. That said, I do like taking advantage of space so it's a sacrifice I was willing to make. :P

I built in the fractal design arc mini r2. by technical terms its an matx mini tower but can fit any cpu cooler you want, and they pretty much made this thing to fit as much as possible in a small profile. It holds up to 6 3.5" bays and 2 2.5" bays while supporting roughly 11" gpu's and if the top 3 3.5" bays are removed, it'll support any modern gpu you throw at it.
additionally, if the all 6 3.5" drives are removed, or if the bottom rack of 3.5" drives are moved next to the psu (and you don't use 5.25" bays), you have space for a 360 rad up top and a 240 in the front with room for push pull.

I don't really think ATX is even necessary for most people, unless they go into the x99 category or something. With the trend towards modularity in the case market in the last 3 or so years, smaller form factors have become a lot more feasible and less of a niche market.

Unless you actually need all of the pcie slots (and on am4 or z270 idk how you would) for an atx mobo, it seems like a waste of space to me.

I like my full towers. Better thermals. Quieter, basement for the PSU, etc. 

 

I bought a full tower for my file server, filled up the drive bays, then I bought a matching full tower for my gaming PC, even though it only has 2 drives and 1 GPU. Not to mention it allows me to mount as large as a CPU heatsink as I want. 

 

So tell me why my towers are a waste again?

And I too can install tower coolers or a 240 aio in this itx build and temps are also on point. No window so a PSU basement is kind of a moot pro or con. If you like full towers than good on you. I'm just personally not a fan of taking up so much space when I can achieve the same end goal in a smaller footprint.

I do get the appeal, especially if you have the real estate wherever the pc is occupying. It'd be nice to have a full basement for drives and the psu, not to mention HELLA room for a water loop if it tickles your fancy. Although most MATX and a fair number of itx (mostly cube cases) support any tower cpu cooler nowadays. the bigger towers are really nice if you go x99 and plan to expand to SLI or a pcie ssd in the future or something without having to worry about it being suffocated.

itx is a tough sell for me, even being the small form factor type. With how small they can get MATX cube cases that support full tower coolers while still having the ability to expand gpu wise or get a pcie ssd etc is a nice bit of insurance that, to me, is worth the bit of extra footprint. If itx motherboards had an additional 8x pcie slot somehow, even with only 2 dimm slots for ram, I'd be all over it. if nothing else, matx is a really happy middle ground. I think atx is overkill unless youre in the x99 category and itx can be iffy depending on what upgrade paths youre planning on in the future; they just have to be really well thought out (which im into but I can see how some wouldn't want the hassle).

edit: but I do have to agree, seeing a single gpu with a single ssd does kind of erk me when there isn't a reason for it. meaning if they don't plan on using the case in the future for a nas, SLI/crossfire, custom waterloop, or mod something badass into the pc.
