Asus Tinker Board

Computer components makers Asus has revealed a alternative to the Raspberry Pi series, called Asus Tinker Board or it's actual name, Asus 90MB0QY1-M0EAY0 Tinker Board. This micro computer comes with a quad core ARM Cortex A17 running at 1.8GHz, with 2GB of LPDDR3, Mali-T764 GPU, 4x USB 2.0, 1x micro usb, gigabit lan, and HDMI 2.0 for 4K video support. Note that it can run 4K H.264 or H.265, but not 4K Netflix as that's only available Intel Kaby Lake cpus. Asus has made a dedicated OS for it and might support other Linux distros in the future. It's available for pre-order in the UK for 55GBP including VAT.

I love the idea of these itty bitty computers. Never got one though. I think the only thing I would try with one is to make a homemade laptop.

looks like its made to be compatible with raspberry pi layout, can someone confirm that?

they are amazing to take with you on holiday somewhere so you can hook it up to the hotel tv or something and use it with a wireless keyboard and use it as a media center/nas or something like that. come home, offload holiday snaps and look at them on the tv. and after that kick back and watch a pirated movie or catch up on the news from home via kodi.

Or like some pocket projector of some sort... where you can all put in your pants pocket

Ah, that'd be neat to see if it would be capable of emulating N64 games. I'd be inclined to actually purchasing one if it could.

nah the rIP 3 is my pick, i wouldent spend more on something that i(think atleast) preforms worse in compute power, if i want less compute power because less heat id get a rPI 2 or 1 instead

I spent $2500 on building my PC and all i do with it is play no games atm & watch anime at 1080p(finally) watch YT and write essays...  nothing, it just sits there collecting dust...

About 7 minutes into this video is a screenshot of gpio pins but I can't access the web site from my phone. Also in this video is an interesting banana pi

Sadly the same cant be send for the various Pi specific Os'. Which includes retropi. Which was the only reason I was interested in this one.

At most you'd be getting an Atom for something this small. It is also MUCH harder to program for x86 due to the nature of the instruction set (if you are doing low-level stuff for IoT, etc.). If you wanted x86 for IoT you'd be getting an Intel Edison/ Galileo. Otherwise, you'd get something else for media consumption.

 

rPIs were never really meant to be media consumption devices, despite people repurposing them as such either. Though anecdotal, I speak from my own and other's experiences.
