First off, before you start screaming get an SSD I am getting an SSD.

Now that we have cleared the air on that, I'm looking into buying a 3TB HDD and I don't know which one to pick out of these two:

1) Toshiba DT01ACA3000

2) Seagate Barracuda ST3000DM001

Toshiba is $100, while Seagate is $110. (in my country)

Drive would be used as storage drive. I'm mainly looking for reliability and overall decent drive.

SSD: Crucial MX300 525GB | HDD: Seagate Barracuda 7200.12 500GB - Toshiba DT01ACA300 3TB

Neither is really that known for reliability (or at least compared to something like WD but they don't offer any WD blues 7200RPM (at 3TB) which are their reliable blues, not the labelled greens...) so I guess Seagate?

Looking at my signature are we now? Well too bad there's nothing here...

Not quite sure why, but most 3TB drives are unreliable. You're better off getting a 2TB or 4TB for reliability. 3TB tend to crap out sooner than most.

WD's closest drives are their Reds (which have pretty great reliability, variable speeds between 5400 and 7200 and more warranty than regular drives) and the 3TB version are roughly 125 USD.

There are only 1TB 7.2K RPM blues, higher are all 5.4

Personally I have no issue with a 2TB Seagate Barracuda too

Toshiba use to be good at making drives back in the day. Either one you will most likely be happy with any both of them have low failure rates dont let anyone pursway you to think that the failure rate is 15% or some crazy number like that.

Yes I know that in general non of the HDDs have that high failure rate.

It's just when I read the reviews on like Newegg or amazon it is like balanced between those who praise the drive and how it is working fine for many years, and those who scream "for the love of god don't buy it" it failed after two days/weeks/months.

So those reviews don't indicate real failure rate as it would be like 40-60% if judged by them.

If you had to pick between these two, which one would you choose?

If I had to pick I would go with Seagate as their brand currently is a lot more reputable than toshiba.

Either way read this article on drive failure rates... https://www.backblaze.com/blog/hard-drive-failure-rates-q2-2016/

WD red 3TB or 4TB is what I would buy if I were you. After a while of reading reviews, all hard drives look unreliable. For whatever reason, hdd shopping is just as difficult as case shopping... maybe it's just me though...

Definitely a hard thing to shop for.

Anyway I made a quick comparison of the drives and they are almost identical, but in the favor of seagate.

I'd get the WD red, but they are way too expensive where I live.

Do you think it is worth it to spend extra $14 on the newer seagate vs older one?

I'm not sure. If they are brand new, then I wouldn't be interested. The hdd wouldn't necessarily be proven if they are brand brand new. That's just my thinking though.

If they are new, as in they have a couple dozen reviews, then sure! Go for the extra price. It might be worth it to spend a tiny bit more in the long run.

On the other hand, just looking at prices might not be the best way to make a decision. Same thing with reading reviews. Sometimes the reviews are just onions and emotions. For example, I've never typed a review over either of my ssd's or my HDD. If they failed, then I would be typing a negative review.

So, yes, hard drive shopping is actually very difficult :1 Find what meets your needs and has a decent reputation, okay reviews and a reasonable price. That's all you can do, really. Good luck!

We think alike, do we. Exactly what I'm thinking, the newer one doesn't have well known track record, while older one has a bit spotty one...

I think I'm going to roll the dice and get the newer one and just see how it goes.
