If you need nvidia features (CUDA): gtx 1060

If you dont mind buying used: gtx970

Sometimes 1060 < 480, other times 1060 > 480.

 

I would look at benchmarks for the games you'll be playing with those video cards and consider each one based on the games you'll be playing the most.

970 is immediately disregarded.

The 1060 and RX480 are tied with variations within margin or error and reason with Vulkan and DX12 advantage on the AMD side.

Price to performance winner is whichever card is cheaper (which depends on location).

The 1060 and 480 equal out to about the same performance. Of you can get one for a considerably better price than the other, go for that. The 970 is less powerful, so only go for that if you don't mind buying used and can find a really good deal.

If you play anything OpenGL, your only option is Nvidia. If that's not a concern, go with the RX 480.

I'd think that's where it is, considering even the RX470 can get really close to the 1060 3gb.

That really depends. Not every game will perform better on the 1060.

You understand that in the majority of markets the RX 480 is cheaper and it's offering a very similar performance, right?

Don't comment if you don't know what you're talking about, they are pretty much equal in DX11 with the 480 ahead in DX12 and further ahead in Vulkan.

Not true.  With all the driver improvements, RX 480 is ahead.  They are roughly equal in DX11, with clear win for the 480 in DX12 and Vulkan.

Currently there is 4 PC games that use/support Vulkan API and Doom is the only game that really optimized for it. The other games simply perform better with DirectX.

Please don't spread things like that... With the latest drivers, the RX 480 is on par with the 1060 in DX11 (except for Nvidia titles ofc) and stomps the 1060 on DX12/Vulkan. Overall, it's a better buy if you consider that it's usually cheaper than its Nvidia counterpart. The 4G version is generally an excellent price/performance card, if not the best atm

i just got a 8gb xfx rx480 rs and its running bf1 at 60fps average ultra graphics at 1440p so i will highly recommend that card as well as the fact its only £240 as for the 1060 i dont know

recently got a RX480 4gb, and that thing is amazing, and it might be because it's a 1306mhz version, but it's beaten all 1060 benchmarks, and was only £205.
so i'd have to say RX 480 > GTX1060 6GB, and even more so with DX12 and vulkan gaining traction.

can i ask how your keepin that card cool at i have a xfx rx 480 with 2 90mm fans and at 1305mhz there spining at 3700rpm at 72c

If you are saying that VRAM isn't important, you obviously lack a lot of knowledge in the matter. Also, you are showing old benchmarks, which were published on release (yes, I checked). Check out more recent comparisons, with the latest drivers from both sides, because the situation has changed (HardwareUnboxed and HardwareCanucks have them).
