SSD mounting using all screws?

Go to solution Solved by Enderman,

This is how some people mount their SSDs and it is perfectly fine.

I just got the diypc f2-w and I'm going to be using a PNY SSD for a boot drive and I'm not 100% sure where to mount it.

Along the back side there's three square shaped gaps with 4 screw holes around them. All 4 holes can only be screwed in if the top or bottom spot is used, however the bottom spot doesn't leave room for the cables and the top spot isn't visible. (I like the look of it and would prefer to keep it visible and in the orientation it's in) The middle gap can fit it but it only fits 2 screws.

Is it safe to keep it like that? It's in securely as in it doesn't shake and even so since its an SSD I imagine perfect stability isn't a major concern.

if you want to show off your SSD, i suggest double sided tape :P

Any particular reason? Or is it personal preference. I like the position the screws have it in now and since the case comes with screws it seems easier than buying more materials.

it was kind of a joke more or less, you can literally just chuck your ssd behind the mobo tray and forget about it. if you want to show it off, it's usually best to be mounted in some way that is not hideus, which usually means double sided tape, because cases that show off SSDs are kind of rare.

That makes me feel much more comfortable knowing that that is acceptable especially in comparison to my two screws.

here's a classic to show you how much it does not matter at all:

Oh gotcha so since my case has a good way of mounting it there's no real concern

Some need active cooling though...

No, they don't.

Only some NVME and M.2 drives get hot.

I've got an SSD that got hotter than the passively cooled CPU used in the build...

So yes, some do.

So yes, some do.

2.5" SSDs do not need any active cooling.

That's why there are mounts for 2.5" drives behind motherboard trays that thousands of people use with 0 temp issues.

If your SSD was running above 50C then that's because it is either defective or you have something like a GPU blowing hot air on it.

I pulled it out of a machine with no moving parts and it was the hottest part in it.

It needed active cooling. It hasn't skipped a beat, it still works fine. Just gets stupidly hot

By "hottest" do you mean over 50C?

Because if not, then it's fine.

It was well over 60

Well something is definitely wrong then... either crappy SSD or broken temp sensor...

You can put a regular 2.5" drive in a spot with no airflow and it will stay below 40C.

No I mean I took it out of the machine because it shut down and it burned me
