I have a 1440p monitor and found 1070 is barely enough for games I want to play(e.g. Witcher 3, modded Skyrim SE). I was thinking about buying a 1080 so it will last longer, but I have heard many times that pascal is optimized for DX11. Therefore is it better to have a 1070 now and buy a new card when I start to play new games since future games will all be based on new API?

i'm pretty sure the 1070 can run witcher 3 at 1440p just fine.. unsure about modded Skyrim SE.

for me my 1070 can do 1440p decently in the game i play. though there are a couple that it's poor at, such as Dishonored 2. but those games are pretty unoptimized anyways.

if you want you can wait for Vega, which is expected to drop sometime in May.

yes most games in the future will be DX12 or Vulcan depending on what takes off(i REALLY REALLY want it to be Vulcan so i can swap over to Linux). right now wait for Vega if you want a new GPU and see what the brings

I spent $2500 on building my PC and all i do with it is play no games atm & watch anime at 1080p(finally) watch YT and write essays...  nothing, it just sits there collecting dust...

Builds:

The Toaster Project! Northern Bee!

The original LAN PC build log! (Old, dead and replaced by The Toaster Project & 5.0)

to be fair it's a rumor, not really confirmed. and the source actually comes from wccftech. but at this point everyone is itching for Vega to release so i can believe any rumored release date

Wait for the 1080Ti if you're going the Nvidia route. Firstly, it'll be top of the line with the exception of the XP. Second, AMD's new lineup should be debuted around then so prices would be adjusted to compete. The cream of the Pascal architecture should last you, assuming no failures, for many years.

The better card u buy the longer it lasts. Money can be earned and spent. Get what you can and what meets your needs. DX12 has been out for a while and there are still hardly any games supporting it....So I wouldnt worry about that, its still couple of years away imo.

If you want something for the new API, you got to buy the newest vega and the most expensive one. 1070 will be okay for the next two years at least. Until fully implemented DX12 games come out, pascal is still relevant. You could probably keep it 4 years if you pick your settings wisely. I played with a gtx 670 on 1440p since 2012. Last year i was on med settings on almost any new games. I expect the new Vega to be a 1080 side grade though...
